The reigning DJ King (Mk XI) is @Strewth...playing some real music (with guitars and stuff) (Part 1)

And yes to tool.

Now I need to think of my favourite gigs, but this is difficult. How do you compare an arena show with 300 people crammed into a tiny space having their heads blown off or with a show where everyone is sitting on the floor and the crowd is silent hanging on every single word?

For a while I thought I was on my own with my love of A flight and a crash, but as the years have gone by a lot of people rate it. I found the album enjoyed it and saw them play at the arty, but when my daughter was quite sick in the hospital they were on tour out here with bouncing souls and I missed it, but it made the song Paper thin really resonate and I was even more into them after that. They won’t get you hooked on record but live even now they’re a force. So listen to A flight and a crash, Caution or Exister. I would hazard a guess that Trusty Chords from Caution may resonate a little for you.

tool= yes

5-1

No.

Yes please

I could easily come up with a completely different top five which would also be honest:

Pixies Festering Hall
Devo Festering Hall
Einsturzende Neubaten Warehouse in Altona
Madness Melbourne Uni
Billy Idol Festering Hall

P.S. Fark Tool, they’re as clinically boring as Chick Corea playing really fast scales and pretending it’s music. NO.

Took awhile of thinking to get my top 5 gigs. The favourite vs best angle is the kicker to me, if anything favourite bands have such a great capacity to disappoint. Normally i go in hoping they don’t disappoint. My real favourite gigs the ones that surprise, changed my perspectives and have stuck in my memory aren’t necessarily my favourite bands from a listening perspective.

Honourable mentions to Tool, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Sigor Ros and The National who all lived up to my hopes and killed it.

Top 5 in no particular order

The Tea Party - Offshore I was 16, knew nothing of the band but they blew me away. First big outdoor concert and they had this loud rock with a bit of psychedelic and progressive bent. Was the first set of anything where I got lost in the music and transported to another place.

The Orb - Earthcore similar circumstances but different genre. It was a sunrise set in the middle of a forest with early morning fog, playing the most tripped out stuff I’d ever heard. I was in the right headspace;)

Charlie Parker Band - Birdland Jazz Club New York. The best music I’ve ever heard, nope. But to do the whole jazz bar experience in a New York institution with dinner and cocktails was a bucket list moment.

Underworld x2 Big Day Out and Metro. This was one of my favourite bands I’d been waiting to see for a long time. The anticipation and then celebration of born skippy was epic. Technically the gigs were on 2 days, but for me I saw them twice in the one day if you know what I mean;) How often do you get to see your favourite band twice in the one day.

The Kleptomes - Private New Years gig. This one might make Wim jealous. Somehow one of my mates was friends with Kleptones on the internet. We loved his stuff and been hammering it at all our parties. I got a text at lunchtime New Year’s Eve. Kleptones is in Australia and we’ve invited him to our private Bush doof and he’s going to play a set. Jumped in the car headed up into Yarra Valley forest. 100 friends private party with one of our favourite artists for a free private gig on New Years! Unbelievable fun was had. Got to meet the guy and have beers afterwards too.

About 2001, 2002-ish?

Yep

I was there too, that was pretty cool.

7-3, and Hambo delivered on point.

I can’t even remember who else played. Lots of bid day out memories are blurred into one.

Ok. So these guys are a gimmick band, all horror, and death and monsters and scary stuff. The bassist has a custom made bass shaped like a small coffin. They really, really go with it.

So keep in mind, these lyrics are parody of an old-school schlock horror movie, rather than being literal. (Thankfully.)

I feel it was the same year System of a down played, and maybe the Foo’s?

Darren Emerson solo in 2001

Yeah I definitely saw them post Emerson.

I just looked it up, 2003.

Also on the bill, Foo Fighters, Jane’s Addiction, Kraftwerk, PJ Harvey, QOTSA, Sparta… Good year

Edit: Ha, I should have just done what Jez did.
