Yes

yes

@swoodley some live recent KGLW

Hmm another example of lazyarse musos sampling other peoples songs.

No

Sorry @swoodley but I’ve already counted 7 yes votes so your grinchy no is redundant :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Marginal…
I’ll give them a condeded pass for correctly recognising that saxophones are part of a brass section, and not a solo instrument.
So… yes… barely…

You didn’t did you?

Saxophones, brass?

Incorrect.

Anyway, I’ll give that a yes.

He must be thinking of stage bands. He’s not alone in his sax hate though. IIRC they were disliked in Nazi Germany, and they aren’t in orchestras.

No to the song though.

Well, at least they got something right…

Well yes, that is true. My point (sax is complete balls as a solo instrument) stands though…

Which sax though? The soprano sax is clearly a solo instrument and works as such. And as with most other instruments the further down the line of instruments you go the worse they work as solo instruments.

A guitar is better as a solo instrument than a bass
An oboe is better as a solo instrument than a basoon
A euphonium is better as a solo instrument than a tuba (maybe!)

Etc etc

The real issue is not so much the saxophone. It’s the type of schmalz that the solo alto sax gets associated with and which is conjured in all our minds any time we hear that particular tone.

(That and bebop jazz, but that’s a whole different story)

It’s not so much the schmaltz that has forever scarred me. It’s more the ■■■■ released in the 80’s (mid-80’s especially) where the sax solo became a staple. All of a sudden bands had a member like Kirk fkn Pengilly or that twonk in Spandau Ballet, whose sole contribution was to ponce around like a peacock and honk over everything. Bruce Springsteen was a major protagonist too. So was Iva Davies/Icehouse.

All of a sudden the guitar solo was out, and honking bastardry was plonked on top of everything by unsympathetic producers pushing their own barrows. So many bands released an album during that time with lashings of sax liberally sprinkled everywhere, when they don’t have another album in their catalogue anything like it.

More recently The Killers decided on their third album that the sax was where things are at, and included it on every other track. Madness… it’s comfortably the worst album in their canon, and they’ve never recovered from it.

Clarence Clemens played with Springsteen from 1972 until his death in 2011.

He was an integral part of the band.

I get that you don’t like the saxophone but don’t belittle a great musician and performer just because of that dislike.

I’m not belittling him… I’m belittling his instrument…
