Agreed, but their formation was a direct response to The Beatles.
Maybe The Beatles were the original boy band. Four guys, higlighted and different personalities, marketable to the nth degree and sending teenage girls into a ■■■■■■■ frenzy.
Perfect boy band playbook.
The only descenable differences are talent and longevity. Like cultural defining in both categories.

I aint comparing the beatles to boyz2men or insink or who ever. But until Revolver (maybe Rubber Soul) the beatles core audience and function was that exact boy band description.
It’s bizarre that so many American (and a few not American) rock bands classed themselves as Metal;

Whitesnake
Cinderella
KISS
White Lion
Skid Row
etc etc
99% of boy bands comprise blokes that don’t play an instrument

So…not The Beatles 
Def Leppard and Whitesnake are/were English.
Isn’t this where corporate greed and record companies tried to formulate the recipe for turning music into gold.
Which also led to Stock Aitken and Waterman era, which I think we are in last phase of music of mostly just all manufactured, voice synthesised basically AI.
I think we will go back to live music again or it will just be a relic of day gone by…
