The slow death of Melbourne’s inner-city pubs

banned for life from a pub in Essendon, you must have really screwed up.

Well if you had ever been to De Marco’s and met Phil De Marco, you would know you didn’t have to do much to be barred. Think it had something to do with me riding my motorbike through the main bar.

Thursday nights after footy training they had great music, back in the 1970’s. Local group called Bluestone, with Dorothy Bull singing up a storm. We did drink a lot back then.

Did Phil De Marco see service in Vietnam? If it’s the same bloke, he was a year or two ahead of my brother.

Not sure, but was the right age, probably would 75 now. He was an angry bloke, Vietnam would explain it.

I ran into him at a joint he started near me in North Rd, South Caulfield about 2005. He certainly was on the tempestuous side. Told me he’d fallen out with his family because they were real DLP’ers and didn’t agree with his views on the futility of our Involvement.

Yep that would be the same De Marco. Maybe I am not barred any longer, not sure the pub still exists.
