The Trail Hiking thread

But heading up high to Tassie is a bit different to walking along the coast or plenty of other summer walks and generally you can get a forecast for the next week before you head off and if things get real bad, set up your tent and hope into your sleeping bag for the day.

I almost always have thermals in the bottom of my packs. They are really light weight and don’t take up much room.

But I’d be more concerned with the temperature at night, during summer.

All you’ll probably need is a thermal top & bottom. Fleece jumper, which keeps you warm even if it gets wet…….And a rain coat.

If you’re worried, you could throw in a down jacket aswell.

Other than that, you can just wear a regularly cotton t-shirt during the day.

The idea is having options with layers.

I’m a fan of these after a mate recommended them to me. Inner toe sock liner to keep your feet dry and an outer sock for padding. Really good at avoiding blisters. Merino, so it’s easy to keep hygenic on a multi day hike.

Even yesterday, I went for a day hike at the Grampians. And for First Aid purposes, I always put a thick fleece jumper in my pack.

If break my ankle (or some other injury) and I’m stuck over night, I can atleast keep my body warm.

They look really interesting. I often wear two pair of socks with a light synthetic pair on top to reduce friction but might try these now.

I don’t tend to get blisters. But I put that down to walking at a slowish-yet steady pace.

When I get blisters is when I’m in a group, and they walk a lot faster, and I’m trying to keep up with their pace.

My lack of pace is not down to lack of fitness, but mainly that my walking technique goes out the window…… and my feet/toes start to slide & rub.

I smashed this one out last weekend, pushing myself for the fitness gains and a bit for mental health.

Awesome place. So much wildlife. You can walk from the dam wall up to the hill with a great lookout and then back if you want a shorter hike. The full loop was great, but was quite tiring on the ankles as it has a constant sideways slope. 4-5 hours if you aren’t being a mental fitness nutcase.

There’s a NZ Brand that make similar.
Been trialling them at work.
Yet to hit the trails with them though…

Toes taking a bit of getting used to but they’re comfy and definitely slide/glide rather than rub.

New shoes?

Toe socks, I’m guessing.

Yes, toe socks haha. Feel most unusual.

Fair bit of walking around Marysville this morning while away for a skate weekend (that I did more walking than skating on).
Missed a trail and ended up accidentally doing a bit of bush bashing and path making. Can see how people get lost and go AWOL.
Planned route in blue vs actual route lol.

Keppel is a pretty nice day hike. Did you do the loop, to the falls and then back? That’s the one i did last time, go massively lost on the home leg though, missed a turnoff and ended up walking an extra 45 mins with my phone on 1% so had very little idea where i was…

I did the falls hike separately after brunch.
So first walk was from Anderson Mills camp ground to Keppel and back, then second was from Steavenson car park to the top of the falls and back.

:joy::joy::joy:
You could give me 100 goes and I don’t think I could recreate the path I took haha.
Snuck up on me too. Obvious path kinda petered out and before I knew it I was just in bush. I had gravel tracks from North to East of where I was so just tried heading north east as much as the terrain would allow me.
On the way down tried finding two tower(?) track heading out of Keppel’s car park but for the life of me couldn’t find it anywhere.

Did the Grand Canyon Loop (Blue Mountains) today.
Absolutely splendid with sporadic light rain falling.

AllTrails had it as ‘Moderate’, but the steps completely kicked my ar*e as i packed my 50lt backpack pretty full, and had a couple of bags at the front.

With Bogong coming up soon, will have to get some serious miles into the legs.
Going to hit some challenging Trails tomorrow in the area.

I’m here right now.
Still mustering up the courage to jump this, to then be rewarded with more great views !
Will my 53yo knees buckle at the critical point ?
