The Trail Hiking thread

Hang on…let me look again.
I’m just untangling some Paracord, as I need it for insurance for the jump.

15-20m down to 80 degree rock face, then (I assume) you’d be taking the tour all the way to the bottom.

Did the jump with Paracord.
Now right on the edge of Hanging Rock.

Views are insane !

Edit…
Okay, jump is embellishing.
More like a long step.

I’m feeling sick just thinking about it.
Spectacular views and pics.

There is some room up there, but not much.
This is (approx) as far as I was prepared to go, though there were a couple of climbers anchor bolts near the edge.

1 more (I promise), for @loyalandproud

It actually makes me sick watching that short clip.
In reality though, I have both feet planted firmly, and am stretching 1 arm out to get the shot.
I’m not in danger, but my phone is history if it drops out of its holder (or I drop it).

Blue Mtns is such a cool place for hiking with so many track options.
I had to pull out of the Wentworth Falls staircase, so there’d be no way I’d get anywhere near that gap activity.
The Six Foot Track is a pretty cool multi day hike ending up at Jenolan Caves or you can do an overnighter to Cox River campsite & back.

Mt Bogong should be fun, though will be hot if you’re doing it in summer. Isn’t much shelter up in the higher sections there.
We did an all day return from Mountain Creek camp but returned in the dark (in Autumn).
Cleve Cole Hut area will give you some treed shelter from the elements if you’re planning on doing an overnighter.

Why is that ?
Age, injury, fear of heights ?
If fear is the answer, I believe this can be mitigated almost entirely with an appropriate climbing rope, provided you’re actually capable of jump stepping the 1-1.2 metre required.

I definitely want to go back and explore the many trails.
Feel like it would require a week at minimum, and even 2 (ideally).
Tent Camping for the majority of days, with intermittent Hotel stays to freshen up, clean oneself, power up various gear and power banks etc…
It would take quite a bit of planning, but so worth it.

I’m so disappointed I didn’t get my lazy ar*e in gear and do Wentworth Falls.
Having said that, the Grand Canyon Loop was magical (& fkn hard with 13kgs+ on my back and front)
AND
Burramoko Ridge (Hanging Rock) are simply the best views experienced from a hike that ive ever done.
Absolutely spectacular in every direction.
Bonus…saw a juvenile snake 60-70cms (probably a brown) not even 5 minutes into the hike on the fire trail.

Australia Day long weekend is the plan.
Camp somewhere near parking the car on Australia Day.
Early night/early rise to hit the summit on the Saturday, spend the night at Cleve Cole, then get up before sunrise to hit the summit again on Sunday morning.
I think this plan should work, though not sure yet on estimated times to make the distances.

Thanks for the tips :+1:

Fear of heights, but it seems to come and go, I’ve been to Wentworth Falls 3 times and been able to do it only once. The staircase is a generic well populated track, its just a sheer drop off tho will little more than a rail, its not a climbing place you’d be roping up on. I shudder when I see parents with kids on it.
Strange as I’ve done Crosscut Saw which has some hairy spots and various wire bridges on the Hollyford track which are a reasonable height above the rivers they cross, must be a mindset when I know I have to do it in a group hike.

re Bogong,
Times shouldn’t be a problem.
Mountain Creek campsite is usually the basecamp, it will probably be busy on a public holiday.
You’re 2km to the start of the Staircase Spur track. (8km to Eskdale Spur track)
Biovauc Hut is a good half way food break stop up Staircase. Has a water tank (sterilise/filter)
At the top, Cleve Cole is the place to stay overnight. The surrounding treed area is a lovely area and gives protection as Mt Bogong ridge is very open.
Cleve Cole also has a fancy dual drop toilet nearby.
You can come down Eskdale Spur track on return, its within 100m of the staircase track on the ridge. Mitchell Hut on the way down, has a drop toilet & water tank (level/quality?).
There’s a bit of a flat walk along Mtn Crk Rd at the bottom (closed to traffic here from east of the campground due to damaged bridge last time I was there)

Great info.
Very helpful.

Appreciated :+1:

More of a stroll than a hike, lol. But we did about 9 or 10km around Lake Mountain today. I’m getting old, but I think I can/need to get much fitter than currently, lol.

Yep, that was a sketchy move.
They knew I was there, but there is very little room from the edge there.

I should have verbalised it better.

Does anyone use a quilt instead of a sleeping bag when over night hiking?

Any suggestions for brands/types?

The Wilderness Shop in Box Hill is having a closing down sale, shutting up later in January. Some good gear to be had.
