Yeah I think we’re in for some almighty beltings, worse than Richmond. It just makes the Richmond deathride more exciting. We got what most wanted which was the future team out on the park largely given the keys, and it was promising against a flakey GWS who are liable to beat Brisbane one week and lose their way to the ground the next. I reckon we’ll get the spoon and get to savour the win and the belief for the young blokes.

Yes, Pick 1 will get you the 3rd best kid in the draft and Pick 2 will get you the 4th best kid in the draft
I wouldn’t be too concerned yet. We’ve still got Hawks, Crows, Cats, Sydney and Port.
Our percentage will cop a hammering.

You mean pick 4 and 5 since the three best players are already in somebody’s academy?
The specifics of pick 1 over the last 20 years or so are really murky. There’s a bunch that went to expansion teams that were truly abysmally ■■■■ (the 2012 giants team had 2 wins for the year with a percentage of 46. That’s our current season but with every single loss being by an additional 9 goals). There are careers wrecked by injury. And across pre-selections and cowardly bidding, there have been a bunch of first picks who nobody actually thought was the best player.
None of that’s going to stop being true, so in that sense the two questions of “is pick 1 even that good” and “is the general consensus best 18 year old player even that good?” aren’t the same question.
That aside, for me the issue over the years isn’t about whether we finish 17th or 18th. It’s the seasons doing everything in our power with our most experienced mature players, topping up with jobbers, getting 7-11 wins and being nowhere either on the ladder or in the draft. We’ve had an actual bottoming out year (off season moves still pending), and I’m fine with that. Happy, even. If 2 wins with a percentage in the mid 60s isn’t the worst team in the league, well, so it goes. Sometimes the wooden spoon is 1 win, sometimes it’s 2, sometimes it’s 3. I would prefer pick 1 to pick 2, and I hope richmond win another game and we get pick 1 (and all the other implications of that). If it comes down to it in round 24 with us playing port and the tigers playing geelong would I support borderline farcical team selection? Yes. But on match day, once the team’s out there playing, they should 100% be doing everything they can to win.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter whether the player is good or not, it comes down to having the pick of the type of player you need. E.g. pick 1 will give us the option of a ruck and midfielder. Pick 2will give us what’s left.
True, although I’d say the majority of teams finishing a season with 2 wins need most types of player.

Slightly different since there’s now a decided advantage to bidding for Walker or Cochrane, rather than before when the reason was “make ‘em pay”.
