Tony "Godra" Modra: Encouraging Progress

Deserves a thread, I feel. Crashed his cattle truck this afternoon in SA and is in Flinders hospital in a serious condition. Reports few, varied and paywalled.

This Farking sucks.

Every kid playing markers up in the 90s channeled this guy.

This is terrible. He’s the best.

Man, this hits.

As a teenage bombers fan, Adelaide in the nineties could be hostile, especially at football park.

With a Crows season ticket I found on the bus, I followed that man from end to end at every Crom home game. I used to stand with the “GODRA” sign people in my Essendon scarf and scream for every mark and goal line he was wearing red and black.

I wore #6 and begged my coach to switch me from full back to full forward. One week I had five at half time and refused to kick any more because that’s how many Mods had snagged the night before.

FAAAAAAAARK this.

The great Merv Neagle lost his life in a similar fashion in a truck accident.

Hoping that Mods pulls through. One of my all-time favourite non Essendon players.

He was an incredibly special player.

I made a black and red Modra poster that I took to the 1991 sanfl GF.

That was not an enjoyable day.

I got very sick of hearing that The Bloods ran on to the field with only one goal in mind.

I also once loudly abused Steven Sims.

The year that Ablett won mark of the year for dropping that ball, Modra had three better.

The “Boy who could fly” mark springs to mind.

His 13 goals against Richmond remains the most dominant FF performance I’ve ever seen.

Doesn’t get spoken about enough in the same breath of some of the other great forwards of the 90s

In the 80s it was ‘Capper’, it was Modra in the 90s. Good times indeed!

Get well Tony!

He was a dog that day. Was sent out to stop Simpson in whatever way he could.

Still don’t know how Mods hit the point post from the goal square.

I remember the WA club doctor telling me that Mods rocked up just before half time in a game in his tux from the night before. Got a massage. Kicked 10 in a half

Thoughts with Modra and his family. Horrible news.

This may have been more fleeting than i remember but the Sunday twilight/evening fixtures from footy park in the early 90s feel like a formative part of my footy upbringing, probably because Modra made them appointment viewing
Get well Tony!

Remember being behind the goals a few rows back at the G in the 90s with sister. Must’ve been a Bombers vs Crows clash.

He was amazing being so close and seeing him getting the elevation off a few steps and pulling in these top draw marks he did .. time after time in many games. And he’d finish off as we all know with a beautiful drop punt goal.

He was a star .. and still is.
Seriously sincere thoughts and prayers he pulls through. Tony Modra is a top guy.

And a cattleman .. they’re tough blokes. :crossed_fingers:

Really hope he pulls thru this.

Agreed, he was my favourite non-EFC player.

When he had his kicking boots on (which was regularly), he was beautiful to watch.

I’m not old enough, but I assume that the joy I got from watching him was the same as non-EFC people watching Coleman?

Humble Brag. Great that you got to be part of it at the moment with the season ticket.

yep I remember the high flying marks and his swagger was up there with Wanganeen 90’s levels.
Markings up plenty pretended to be Godra.

There are grave fears for Crows legend Tony Modra after a crash involving his cattle truck this afternoon.

The 57-year-old is in a very serious condition after being airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre from the crash site at Back Valley.

Police issued a statement about the crash at 5.20pm on Thursday.
