Very under rated post - thread is about favourites, not best, and I can see exactly where you’re coming from.

In a similar vein, could go
Billy Duckworth
Roger Merrett
Bryan Wood
Sean Denham
Tony Antrobus

Picking from the current bunch:

WALLA
Harry
Stringer
Cox
LAV

All time?

Hird
Lloyd
Longy
Fletcher
WALLA

Zaka
TBC
Stants
Murphy
Campo

Seriously though:

Jobe
Scotty Lucas
Long
Wanganeen
Harvs

Honourable mention Aaron Henneman?

Hirdy
Lucas
Mercuri
Jobe
Fletch

Special mentions Lloyd, Rioli, Misit, JJ, Solly and Barnard (that grand final).

Current Day:

Parish
Jones
Walla
Stringer
Merrett

Special mention to Cox and Perkins, they’ll get there.

No particular order except for Hird on top. Very hard to choose.

You’re one lucky guy.
Must have been something special going to a game knowing Coleman was going to kick a bag and take mark of the year.
Love to hear some of your stories.

■■■■! I didn’t think of Hooker. One of the greatest clubmen we’ve had. Legend.

Not so lucky because it means that I am very old.
I was standing behind the goals at the Showers Pavilion end watching the game when Coleman flew high for the ball and landed awkwardly, seriously injuring his knee. An ambulance was called and I was standing beside it when he was carried to it.
There were many teenage girls crying when he was driven away.

I was there at his birth and predicted that he would become the greatest full forward in the game and that they would name the medal after him.

I loved Mark Bolton every time we played the Swans.

By no means putting them in the same bracket, but watching Lloyd circa '00 - '01 had a feeling of inevitability, more so a bag of goals than Mark of the Year. Though he did win MOTY in 2008.

I remember walking around Windy Hill (working) and watching a couple of kids in school uniform kicking a footy between them - must have been after school. One of them was Lloyd.

Could’ve had about 10 more in there

No 4. on my list is the baby faced Mark Harvey, one of the most courageous players to ever pull on the red and black in my book.
Local Keilor boy that missed out on 83 reserve grade GF but went on to play in the 84/85 Premierships as a 19/20 yr old in arguably the toughest era of footy…

Best First year player in 84
Crichton runner up 85
Leading club goal kicker in 85
AA honours in 85 & 93
Triple premiership player 84,85,93.

Would love to hear some stories about Harvs from back in the day if anyone would like to share.

Nothing extraordinary but I was at VFL park for my first look at him in 84 and he just kept bobbing up for 4 goals. Hard to believe he later played CHB on guys 6’5+.

I was in travelling London in 1990 and the exhibition game was played a couple of weeks after the GF at The Oval. Team was in a Hotel near the hostel I was staying in, so there were Essendon players galore in the street. Darren Bewick and Harves were behind me queueing at the tube station. I was shocked that harves was only a couple of inches taller than Boris. I was a 5’6” rover in the anmos and I’d had taller opponents than Harvey. He played so much bigger than his physical size - moreso than pretty much anyone, for mine.
