I for one don’t mind Lav. Had a poor year but I think the defence as a whole was obviously awful. If he’s playing as a third tall and surrounded by players that have speed and good groundball skills than you can cover up his weaknesses and let him play to his strengths as a tough as nails lockdown defender.
If you surround him withHeppell, Jake Kelly and McKay then you get performances like this year.
Wouldn’t surprise me to see him perform better with a different team in a purely lockdown role if other pick up the slack around him.
If we get rid of a signed up Laverde (assumed on little $$$), Stringer and Shiel, we’d likely need to bring in players either by free agent or trade.
This could mean we’re starting to add players to our list under the new salary cap structure (like $600k per year). If we do this too often, we might end up stuffing our salary cap with average / mediocre role players. It might actually be better to use the salary cap on more premium players, then back fill with average / mediocre role players.
I strongly doubt we’re just going to delist / trade away and go to the draft relying on 3rd/4th round players.
In a stupid roundabout way, it may be best to hang on to those contracted players and target next year’s crop of free agents.
I’m still in the trade Laverde / Stringer / Shiel frame of mind. Simply so they don’t get named in our 18 more often than not.
If we offload all of Stringer, Hepp, Laverde, Goldstein, Kelly, Shiel and Hind, surely we’d be one of the youngest lists in the AFL right? Not a bad thing.
My thoughts as well.
I’m no Ross fan but he does ensure his defensive 6 are somewhat protected by hiis team centric defensive mentality further up the ground. Def more than we do …
Lav would probably enjoy being less exposed and I reckon improve from what we’ve seen this season. With Saints, Cats or even FC if they’re in the hunt.
Until we have some quality replacements via Hayes or trade that do not break the bank … not sure I’d let him go yet. Certainly prefer Lav to Weid back there no matter what the difference in match-ups are.
If Laverde could kick and was any good at making decisions, I would be happy to keep him. I love his agression/strength, he isn’t a bad 1 on 1 defender, but he is such a liability. Just as Kelly and Heppell were a lot of the time. McKay, McGrath and Redman also had horror moments this year, but we can’t cut them all.
