Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

But Nino just wants the trade done and dusted……. Even if West Coast are asking for a ridiculous price, which would leave us worse off, we simply need to just ‘pay up’.

Don’t bother negotiating…… and we can’t walk away, because that would look bad.

Fcking lol

Weren’t Doggies always going to ask for overs for Dunkley though? He had two years left on his deal.

We did the exact same thing as Dogs the year before and demand 2 firsts for Daniher

still think we get that dunkley trade done if his camp were willing to blow everything up

but they weren’t, and fair enough

Yep, I’m with Nino too. Plus Josh Dunkley would be our best player now (next to Merrett), definitely worth the first 2 picks in the end.

Bet Dunkley is happy now.

That’s irrelevant, because the players we did pick up with the picks didn’t make a difference either.

You have to pay up for known quality.

Dunkley would’ve been our top 2 best players and with Merrett, helped drive higher standards.

Next years top 10 pick you mean?

Nah. The foundations of that trade are pretty clear, even if all the moving parts appear to muddy the waters.

They got #8 and then Port’s future first. They gave up #1 and #8 to get #2 and #3. With some minor picks added in as GWS greased the wheels to get #1.

Port (who are the equivalent to anyone Reid nominates in a trade scenario) gave up #8, their future first and some minor picks and swaps to get JHF and Rioli. #8 and their future first is what it fundamentally cost them to get JHF.

I can’t believe this had to be explained! Boggles the mind…

Neither of us were there, so we can interpret this as we like.

You could equally look at the whole trade as GWS traded 3 and 12 for pick 1. So North traded JHF and 12 for 2, a future first, 40 and 43

Um, that is still not a lot. Given where Port finished it was for #2 and some third rounders. Even if Port finished the same position it’s trading a #12 this year for a #8 next year.

I think that makes the point he went for a lot less than the deal North turned down pre-draft.

You could argue that folding to whatever is asked also negatively affects reputation in terms of clubs walking over us. See gold coast and what they pay for trades. They can get away with it due to ngas, we can’t.

I’m turned around on Harley Reid. Right now he’s behaving more like Harley Quinn.

I’d prefer to use all the picks on selected draft talent and see how we go.

As much as Rowell and Butters would be attractive too, I don’t know if they are worth the capital. Just use the picks.

There are plenty of benefits of bringing in Reid.

More Preseason watchers - sell more coffee
Increased membership sales
Increased Jumper sales
WA kid supporters following him to Essendon
Access to better free agents
Essendon seen as a destination club again…where its been - nobody cares.

Oh you’re definitely right on that. I’m just saying that Eagles will definitely want a top 4 pick as part of a trade for Reid. You’re not getting him for pick 12, 16 and 18

and none of that is related to wining an actual final or premiership.

SIGN HIM UP

It’s funny how people see things differently, I watched the WC game and liked what I saw of Harley Reid a really physical midfielder that can win his own ball and use it well. I’d use a high first and another first rounder without blinking.

Are the picks really that valuable, though? The ratio of first round picks to stars found is pretty low even with the best sides – recent premiership sides in Richmond, Geelong and Collingwood missed with a lot of their first round picks over the 10 year period before their premierships. Geelong, Melbourne and Brisbane are all examples of sides that gave up extensive draft capital to bring in stars that were central to premierships. First rounders can be a great way to find mid tier players, but recent premiers also show that it’s definitely not the only way.

It’s ultimately a weigh up of your predicted trajectory of the players you’d trade in vs. that of the players that you think will be available to you on draft night. The unknown of the draft is alluring, but it’s a big gamble to go that way over a known top-grade alternative.

If you have a top range pick, you get access to the whole draft roster.

Top Draft capital is invaluable. It’s up to the Recruiters to find the talent. We need to give our new Recruiting team the opportunity…… and not blame them for past mistakes of previous incompetence.

There is no coincidence Butters return has generated a massive improvement in Ports fortunes over past 3 weeks. He is a star and I think a bit underrated outside of SA. Would be a great pick up for us and likely half the price of Reid.
