Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Just absolutely must get Harley Reid. We can build a Carlton esque top tier with H Reid, Caddy, Z Reid, Kako and Martin.

Just need to make sure the rest are not as crap

He has unfortunately unfollowed Essendon and only follows Geelong and West Coast on insta. RIP

Troll. Not you, Harley…….:crossed_fingers:

He is going to break your hearts guys.

Plus he is the wrong fit for us.

How’s he the wrong fit? He’s exactly what we need.
Agree with the broken heart bit though

I just checked. No idea if he ever followed Essendon but he does only seem to follow WC and Geel.

Gotta keep everyone guessing.
Cats - Blicavs, Dangerfield, Jeremy Cameron, Tom Stewart, Grian Miers, Bailey Smith, Mitch Duncan, Jhye Clark, George Stevens, Joel Selwood, plus more
for us
Caddy, Duzza, Draper, Langers, Hepps, Hobbs, McGrath, Setterfield, Smartt, TSatas, Davey x2, Baldwin, VOSS, Roberts, Lual

can’t read a lot into it. That third quarter against Brisbane helps.

He grew up supporting the Cats.
I’m sure he’s followed them long before he was drafted

He did, also followed our Essendon VFL page. Its over. These new generation players speak volumes with little things like this.

The unfollow is a bit uncool

Reid is the perfect fit. Slots right into our age demographic and complements the guys we have.

Our side would start looking hella good with him in it.

I wouldn’t really read anything into that.

He’s got the team he plays for and the team he supported growing up.

That’s sensible.

When he was playing for our VFL side? Maybe he’s still friends with a few of the lads playing?

If half the comp has a sense of humour they follow the GWS socials.

Sometimes people look way too deeply into stuff.

Due to Covid! Great response.

Making the points cost higher, and the points value lower, effectively means you need to match with picks closer to the bid on pick.

Pick 5 you’d need two picks 16-20 to match now. Pick 10 two picks 24 to 30. Given where the first round normally finishes nowadays, many of those would be matched with at least one first rounder.

It’s why we need to start collecting 2027 picks.

That’s my point you can still match a pick in the top 5 using multiple later picks which makes a mockery of the draft. You say clubs would use 2 x top 20 picks but history shows that doesn’t happen.

Clubs will always pay overs for top 20 picks being in such high demand so why burn them for points when you can acquire the necessary points with multiple picks in the 30’s, especially with live trading. Just look at what North paid for Richmond’s end of first round pick last year.

Regarding banking future picks we’re better off trading into 2027 using 2028 picks if necessary rather than trade out of the next 2 drafts. Just further delays our rebuild.

The point being that the system is different now, so history may no longer be a reliable indicator. Pick 5 used to be matchable with a couple of picks in the 30s and something in the late 40s. Now you need 30, 31, 32, and 33. That’s still not its real value, but logistically it’s harder to organise, especially if you’re trying to do it on the night.

If the AFL changed the rule so that you could never have more picks than list spots, which is true at the start of the draft but not during, I think that would pretty much take care of it.

I think the fact he followed us in the first place is more telling than the unfollow. Who knows, maybe he’s been instructed by management to play it a little less obvious.

He follows 10 of our current players. I don’t know how that compares with other teams but it’s a decent amount. I’m sure if we had a social media team as good as GWS he’d still follow us.

We either get Reid or have 2x or 3x top 10 picks. Both outcomes are a win for us.

Reid is one best 22 with at least a 50/50 chance of becoming a superstar.

The top 10 picks would likely become best 22 players with Rosa at the helm and who knows they could prove to be AA talent too
