Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Just on the draw of money vs higher chance of immediate success, some players recognise that you might do a career ending or shortening injury no matter where you play so that massive financial security is a huge factor.

some of the numbers being thrown out there like 15 mill over 10 years…thats going to turn a few heads.

How on earth are they getting Reid when apparently they are already getting King and Butters?

If Dangerfield, Duncan, Blicavs and Stanley retire.

That’s about 2.5 million freed up in the budget.

Sure but 2 years later in 2028 they have shannon neale and Max Holmes also coming out of contract , i would think they would probably want a sizable bump up.that leaves out the other players like shaun mannagh end of 2027 etc.
Thats a lot of money tied up that they may need.

In 2 years, Guthrie, Stewart and Cameron could be retiring. As they will be 34-35 by then.

Lol and they COULD also still be playing.

Not likely but look at them and Collingwoods oldies lots of people including me thought they would have gone cliff diving years ago haha

We should probably start talking about Tsatas in here and what we can get from whom.

He seems gone.

“Is it really the worst thing for Essendon [if Sam Draper left]. Even if they get an end of first round pick, it will give them 3 first round picks. 5 picks inside the top 25. Then they re-sign Nick Bryan, they’ve also got Visentini. And Draper has missed a fair bit off football over 3 years”

Dangerfield is plying on for at least 2 more seasons after this

It looks like Reid will wait another 12 months, before seeking a trade.

It’ll give Geelong time to find draft capital and cap space to get the deal done.

Yes…They have a year to cultivate a large enough acreage and allow Cotton-On to forecast on a multi million dollar role so they can craw to the AFL world that Reid has signed for 10 years only on $500,000 per year coz he’s here to win and it’s not about the money!!! It’s the LiFeStYlE

And you would want a player that isn’t hungry for success?

Harley doesn’t strike me as the type of guy to want a long career, he seems an extroverted version of Dustin Martin.

That might be our biggest selling point to him,

“Come to tulla, we will give you 1.5m for 10 years, you will get half the season off through injury, have every September off and your career will be done by 30”

Geelong will never have a salary cap problem, players just reap post-footy benefits for life

He could start a 10-acre cotton farm and sell his crop to Cotton On for 10,000x its market rate and the AFL will rubber stamp it

This is a good call. I know for fact that we have some interest in Zane Duursma.

North have their own version of Tsatas in Will Phillips (ie a young player who dominates in VFL that the FANS are upset doesn’t get a crack). Tsatas doesn’t solve any issues for them.

Its all swings and round abouts, there is a reason they only have 10 premierships.
Up until 2007/8 Geelong obviously wasnt as desireable a place to live.
They will eventually fall, even the great empires eventually fall. The reason for that is people make mistakes.

Most of the players don’t live in Geelong. The clubs lifestyle sell is mostly outside Geelong itself.

Yeah they will eventually fall, just like the Roman Empire. That only lasted a couple
of thousand years.
