Trade talk - from October 2024

I guess Port, for their own reasons, want a first this year rather than a future one.

A lot of posters here wanted Marchbank. Had we got him, the posters would have been overjoyed that Dodoro thought like them, and picked him. Now plagued by injury, the whole of Blitz posters would be saying how useless Dodoro was, picking Marchbank. How useless was Dodoro picking Gumby, Reid, etc etc
On the other side of the coin, no one praises Dodoro for letting go of Fantasia, who basically failed at Port and now at Carlton.

Lets face it, its a lottery. Dodoro failed to win a final in 21 seasons, so, he was responsible and is finished. Lets see if Rosa can improve the list. I will review it again in 2030

Because it’s all just bullshit posturing to get in clubs heads

Fantasia quit… he wasn’t let go.

I don’t know why I’m tagged?
But didn’t we also hang onto Orazio for a year and stop him leaving the same as Joe?

Don’t North want 9 for Houston.

So doesn’t work on draft night.

Unless they want to take it to the draft.

I think North would be happy to take it to the draft they really like Alix Tauru

They’ve already offered their future first for Houston, it’s been reported quite a few times over the past week.

Trading 9 for a future first doesn’t help us with Kako. We still need picks this year.

Do you know why Dodoro cops so much flak? 'Cos it’s not a lottery.

Some random thoughts when looking at things strategically.

Harley Reid is likely to be impossible to get until he is a free agent. I suspect the long game is needed here. I suspect Harley knows this himself, and will sign a contract until FA age.

We want 2025 picks if possible. Hold pick 9, but have a back up plan for draft night in the unlikey event Kako is bid on early. An early bid is a risk for Melb and StKilda, so unlikely.

Consider trading F2 and F3 into 2025 on draft night once the Kako bid is matched.

Kako has been a late first rounder all year. No point romancing his value into a top 10 due to external pressure.

This makes no sense. You are essentially implying they’ll do it out of spite.

They’ll stop talking about it sure (as nothing to gain) but it will make zero difference as to whether they bid.

Anywho, on North’s offer. Throw in 25 and we’d have to closely consider it.

No thanks on F1 alone.

If we could get in some late picks for Kako bid (stringer +Shiel).

Then get to cheer every north Melbourne loss next year wouldn’t be the worst.

Pick 9 unlikely to move the needle next year.

But yeh 2 first rounders plus ability to trade next 2 years firsts gives us lots of draft capital for next year to chase Bont/Reid or Rayner.

We shouldn’t have to involve 9 to match a bid on Kako.

That’s the whole point.

We can use any number of future picks to get junk points if necessary.

We only have to make up the difference between a bid and our second rounder minus academy discount, which doesn’t even include any picks for player trades.

We already do :joy:

Spite really isn’t the right word. It’s about not giving your direct competitor an advantage which wasn’t available to you.

Threats only work if you are prepared to carry it out. They have no interest in us getting a leg up, but they do have interest in making us pay the price in a competitive environment. With the change of NGA rules this year that have screwed over both Melbourne and Saints recently, I have no doubt clubs will bid aggressively.

There are plenty of scenarios that make it advantageous for a club to bid on Kako before our pick, other than spite.

If we don’t have pick 9 then we have mitigated against the risk, it’s wise. I highly doubt we risk a fluid environment like draft night to make the move.

Yes it’s public likely partly because they want us to trade pick 9, ideally to them, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is to their advantage to bid on Kako if we still hold our first round pick.

And upset FC, Collingwood and Saint fans as well.

???

That’s only according to draft experts in the media.

What matters is where clubs ahead of us rate him.

It’s possible St Kilda, Melbourne or Richmond have rated him a top 8 pick all season.
