Training Monday 13/2/2017

I'm curious to know what people think about consistently training in windy conditions. We probably have the windiest training facility in the league. I worry it's hard to perfect skills and practice set plays and potentially creates bad habits. Is Waverley windy these days? If so, I'll stop worrying because Hawthorn have had the best skills for years.

I agree. I kinda have the same concern. I’ve gone down there a couple of times for a kick with mates and it is so swirly it is an enormous challenge.

I remember raising it with Dodoro one time at training and he was of the opinion if they can nail their skills in consistently blustery conditions (like at our current training base) it will be a breeze * no pun intended * for them at Etihad or even the G.

Not sure about all that but yeah it is frustrating.

Hmmm… You would think in windy conditions they would have to kick short more often and not try pin-point long kicks in traffic, potentially making us risk averse, but then again it should force us to kick with the best technique possible…

McGrath played in the black team, lined up in the back pocket on green and fanta when down there. He plays tight on his man, does the defensive stuff well. When he gets the ball he usually fires off a quick handball or kick. He does not to hold onto the ball for long or go for dashing runs. This is prob why he doesn't stand out. He rarely makes a mistake with his disposal, hopefully when he feels more confident he starts showing more dash off HBF.

Based on the above, he should get a spot in the squad to play on Thursday.

Why? It’s not like we intend to play our best 22 on Thursday is it?

He may get a game because some of the older crew won’t be ready for another week/3 weeks and because we will play whoever is fit first.

The way I see it practice games aren’t a reward for work ethic or skills, it’s just a chance to increase the training tempo.

Heppell is flying in training. Bash and crash the real test in matches.

McKenna is going well, stood out more in early Jan session. Wait and see if given a go in JLT series.

Morgan did most of the training today. Prob last on the list of HB flankers we hav (we have alot). Hopefully a good year in the VFL will see him push for snr footy in 2018

It might teach us to use the best technique, but it might program us to use alternative techniques too often. Nailing skills in blustery conditions requires a different style of kicking…short and low and keeping the ball close to your body. I feel for guys like Daniher and Hooker who have a longer ball drop and need to master long range shots on goal and build confidence. The regular windy conditions could be counter productive to kicking straight and posting large scores.

Well based on this training report he would not embarrass himself too much against a Fasolo, a Sidebottom or maybe even Elliot.

I’m sure they do a lot of goal kicking practice inside the Hanger that we cannot see. That’d be the pefect place to practice and emulating Etihad conditions.

This might sound stupid but what happened to Stanton?

I think he said he suspected its just load management. Was fine in the intraclub.

Well, the answer seems simple to me. We need to build a roof over “Etihad”.

We also need to rotate both fields around 90 degrees. Like, oops.

Realistically it should improve the kicking. It’s not so much about what’s the result (of them hitting targets), but the concerntration. An elite footballer should be able to kick a football blindfolded with their muscle memory. But if it means they need to concentrate on every kick and not about going through the motions. disposal should improve.

Technically their ball drop should get closer to their foot. This should also improve kicking.

The main issue I have with windy conditions is, the players are in match simulations with the apprehension that there will be sprayed disposal regularly.

Congratulations on your election victory.

And make Carlton pay for it!

Not happy with their orientation?

Good to see that the spirit of Windy Hill is still with us at Tulla.

Noticed Mark Harvey say they are teaching McGrath the defensive side of his game initially so it explains why he is maybe not playing his traditional running style game. All good development.

Won’t be an issue. He played some great shut down games last year including during the State carnival.

This ain’t no state level carnival. Its The AFL, The Big-time, The Dance, The Big Show. Whatever was done last year was so yesterday.
