Meanwhile up at the Gabba, Goal Kicking practice has finished up a rigourous 3 hour training session by the Lions and I am pleased to report that only 26 sherrins found their way into the Brisbane River.
No none of them trained today. Hooker and Laverde were photgraped in the gym, and Lav came out to watch from the sidelines at one stage. There may have been others in the gym as well.
Heppell trained in the modified group last week, heās the only one I know who is recovering from injury.
Apart from that Cutler, Hurley, Walla, Phillips, and Snelling have trained with the main group in some sessions.
Itās still a bit early to judge a few of the guys, but Iāll give it a go in the best 22 thread taking into account itās as things stand at the moment and could well change by the end of the pre season.
Yes I think so, he has all the attributes⦠What he canāt do now Iām sure he can learn in years to come.
To me heās exactly the type of player everyone is looking for, a good size who I think will be able to impact inside and outside, and can go forward and kick goals.
As @CJohns says we havenāt seen him in a lot of situations yet, but Iām very confident he will be able to excel in most spots.
They did a good variety of drills, tackling, keeping off handballs, contested marking, ball movement with and without opposition, goalkicking and quite a bit of running, mostly 100 - 200.
There really wasnāt too much they didnāt do which you would expect in a session over 3 hours long.
Havenāt seen so many photos of the players together in recent years as I have lately, who knows if that means anything significant but itās good to see.
I like the sound of this 100 - 200 running. If I remember rightly, did you say last off season they started to focus on more on this type of running rather than just endurance?
Influence of Murphy?
To concur with nackers, I also found Perkins and Cox both very impressive - Archie could def slot straight in, such a great size for a kid. I reckon Cox could get a game also, maybe not straight away but I reckon his agility will make up for skinnyness. Reid a beanpole, going to take a while, nothing to judge him on from today. Eyre looked good and Brand was limited.
I also thought Jones looked great too, moving well and training like he belongs. Bryan also had some nice moments from the drills I saw up close.
Hind great toe, and yes his kicking was good. Caldwell good in some contests.
As for the older players, Langers killed it, also Parish and Draper were in absolutely everything. Pidge, Ridley, Merrett all in fine form as expected.
Yes thatās exactly right, it was last pre season they changed from long slow runs to shorter faster runs, I would definitely think it would be the influence of Murphy.
I donāt know if you know the layout of the facility very well, but there is a hill with a rise of probably 15 - 20 metres behind the goals on the second oval. Today they were doing repetitive sprints starting about 100 metres away then running up the hill and recovering back to the starting position.
No I had quite a bit of work to do today and I thought it may be several hours between when I started and finished the report. Rather than having a meltdown and in deference to @BLOODSTAINED_DEVILS I just wrote it in a different thread and copied and pasted. But unfortunately they were onto me before I could post it!
Its a tough one to answer regarding Archie as a big bodied midfielder. He has always been a quick, agile elusive, through traffic player. However he has grown significantly in size over the past 18 months, so who knows if he will evolve into one. I personally think he would be of better use as a weapon to kick goals from the arc as he is a beautiful kick.
