Training report - Thursday 14 January 2021

Yeah, I have always been a big wrap for him but the only question for me is whether he believes he belongs. VFL level it looked very easy for him at times so you could see the confidence grow.

With the addition of these young talented talls a bit of pressure to perform might do him a world of good.

He has the capacity to be a dominating force down back in an intercept role and with his kicking penetration he can do things that few others can with ball in hand.

I wonder if he does mindfulness meditation? Langers went through similar teething problems with confidence and he said that he does mindfulness on a daily basis to help him stay in the moment. I’m sure they are working on all sorts of techniques to get the best out of him.

Sounds like we’ve found our joe replacement then

He did butcher a few but maybe yesterday’s efforts were an aberration.
The good thing was that after everyone had left the track he stayed out there with a staff member and continued practicing.

Wouldn’t that be more due to our medico’s than theirs. After all, the vulture spent three years milking every medical option at our expense. Sorry…I’m not dealing well with this

Since when did commentary reflect reality?

I imagine the young blokes coming in this year are already fatigued, they’ve hardly played competitive sport in a year. Gym / track fit is not match fit.

Most likely an aberration given kicking is a known strength

On Cox’s kicking.

He seems to have two distinct styles…

1). A fluid, text book action when moving at pace and kicking long
2) A gnarly, awkward swinging the boot across his body action when under pressure or short passing.

I was concerned about his kicking pre-draft but everyone was saying he was elite at kicking.

Probably playing back, gets most kicks from handball receives or spills not as a key forward kicking from static every time

And the psychology that goes with goal kicking.

If he’s got the mechanics of a good kicking style then for set goal shots it’ll be about getting the right mental set up to execute.

Nothing wrong with having two kicking styles IMO.
Some of the most creative kicks I’ve seen have had similar.
Long & Wanganeen came immediately to mind.
I reckon you could say the same about Chopsticks Martin too.
In the end it’s the result that matters.
Otherwise you’d spend all day criticising Hird’s kicking because his ball drop was weird.

Re Cox: reckon we might be reading a little too much in a kid in one of his first training sessions eager to impress. The pleasing factor is that he is driven enough to stay out there and work through the yips.
