Training report - Thursday 28 January 2021

Hopefully this lowering the eyes/short kick ball movement at the very least translates into better deliver going inside 50.

I’ve never seen a side waste to many great attacking opportunities by lazy decision-making & poor skill.

That’s what they call it in day-to-day speech.

It’s crazy sometimes how often they miss a better option. Sure it’s easy from the grandstand or on the telly to say kick it to (the top of) X’s (head), but there are times when you really wonder if they have problems with their eyesight. Not sure if it’s a lack of confidence in their team mate or sticking to a gameplan rule regardless of the actual situation or they panic or make poor decisions.

I reckon it’s confidence. You second guess yourself and the moment is gone.

I was thinking about this the other day.

When was the last time you can remember us dismantling an opposition team, and hitting our leading forwards on the chest lace out the entire game?

It just doesn’t happen. We never look in sync as a team.

Agree.

List health will determine our fate.

Just feels like a complete lack of composure most of the time - rushing it when we don’t need to or overusing it when we have 1-on-1s in plenty of space, who just need a fairly straightforward kick to advantage.

Drives me nuts. We so often break down and turn the ball over around the 60m mark out from goal. Or rush it and kick it straight to the opposition.

It’s why blokes like Langford and Ridley stand out so much when going forward and it’s what made players like Goddard such a huge asset to the side.

Our skills & decision making definitely been poor. A lot also comes with lack of cohesion

IIRC we ran something like 24 different players through our fwd group last year.

It’s impossible for fwd-mid synergy with that happening. Or the fwds themselves working well as a unit.

Certainly true. We need to master different strategies coming out of D50. Otherwise like last few seasons Hurley’s left foot long down the line is not going to work even with the number of talls available.

I can’t remember the last time it wasn’t just an absolute slog to simply defeat the opposition & gain the 4 points. Maybe the coach killer against Carlton in 2019? Ever since then we’re fighting tooth and nail even against lowly sides to even be competitive. Every win feels exhausting.

2017 if i recall correctly there were a few games where we smashed the opposition. Games against Port and WCE spring to mind. Can’t recall much since then unfortunately, every win has tended to be a grind. That’s why our percentage has been so crap in recent years, we only beat teams by small margins and we tend to be on the end of a few smashings.

Yeh thats a fair call Karma.

Gee that last paragraph about Begley proved to be completely wrong.

Although to be fair at the end of 2017 I thought we found one in Begley as well. Then he did his knee and never got close to it again.

Can we still even slingshot off half-back, that was generate almost exclusively by McKenna and Saad who aren’t there anymore?

Sure we will be running Hind off the back flank and he has pace, but it be a bit much to expect him to match Saad’s and McKenna’s combined output.

yeah he never looked the same player after the knee unfortunately
