Training Session Wednesday 24January 2024

I expect Cox to grow as things heat up.

As his load increases?

I’ll get my coat…

Classic McGrath. He’s one of the best media trained performers at the club.

Don’t blame him though the AFL world make players speak like that, can’t say much other than the cliche.

Its actually good to get some good news about Cox.
What position was he playing? half back flank

The black back 6.
McKay,Reid, Redman, McGrath, Martin,Cox. - this could be our preferred set up. surprising to see Cox there.

You didn’t name the red defence 6 or black forward 6…but pretty much did in description assume it was similar to
red - Lual, J Davey, LAV, Baldwin, Hayes, Heppell
Black FWD- Jones, Caddy, Langford, (assume Menzie, Gresham, Guelfi?)

I’d imagine Cox was there as coverage for Ridley. Though it perhaps is an indication of how Cox is regarded.

agree, but does that make Cox the 7th defender on the interchange…

Potentially, yes.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he is there at round 1, at worst he is just outside the best 22.

I assume Ridley slots in for cox

Cox could be the 7th defender however

Edit - just saw the same comment mentioned earlier after I replied

Was my take also, they played him initially when Ridley was out last year also in senior side

Third tall defender is his go and preferred role.

Given how many smalls Hawks have fwd I don’t see Cox being our 7th defender round 1, just makes the backline group wayyy too tall overall with McKay, Reid & Ridley already there.

What would an Essendon article be without the obligatory finals reminder.

Depth on paper seems to have all areas covered on the ground. Depth provides options re: selection, injuries.

Debate around who plays will probably be secondary to who’s out injured or out of form. “IF” (and it’s the biggest IF imaginable) there are no injuries Essendon could be in for a big year.

Still, the nightmare 7 weeks start to the season will likely put paid to any notion of a good year unfortunately. If they can somehow scrounge 3 wins in that stretch, there could be hope?

Spot on, best 22 really a thing of the past. Need best 22 to best Hawks, then may need a tweak following week depending on match ups etc. Yes will be staples week in week. Thats why im a bit excited we have more doing full training than in rehab group.

Hind forward again today.

I see what you did there.

Some thoughts:
-Hobbs darting left and right in congestion.
-Baldwin would get a job as a surly bouncer. Rarely lets anyone in.
-Perkins busier than Albo’s spin doctors.
-Redman must have COVID, no one could get near him.
-Cox has struggled at times in defence but is getting better.
-Setterfield won’t be on any billboards but gets the job done.
-Sam Draper running as he used to, not the broken down 2023 version.

Defenders still letting the ball go out the back.

Langford got up very slowly after that speccy attempt. Bit sore but was ok.

Can’t win a car in Jan Langers!

Utterly bizarre that the club allows this. I imagine many of his teammates wouldn’t appreciate it. No doubt it also reduces his lung capacity.
