Training Wednesday 1/3/17

Mind you they probably would have picked a skinny half back flanker who had injuries in his TAC year so slipped but who had great upside.

You mention that Begley might be ahead of Francis for a forward spot. But surely Laverde must be ahead of them at this stage? Or do people see spots for 2 of those 'leadup medium 3rd marking tall' types in the team?

I sort of figured there’s probably only 1 to partner two KPF (Daniher, Hooker) and our 3 small forwards (Fanta, Green, Tippa) considering Fantasia is quite dangerous as a target to kick to along with some of our midfielders who can rest forward and play similar roles (Watson, Langford). Possibility of Begley getting a spot over Tippa maybe? If the coaches choose to structure it up that way.

For mine it will depend on who is available/picked for KPF spots
If Hooker is not available then i think both LaVerde and Begley should play
If Hooker gets up and plays then there is probably only room for one and at this stage i would still go with Lav.

I agree. If Hooker doesn’t come up let’s not go with Stewart and use a mix of Begley, Langford and Laverde as medium talks with the three smalles. It will require some of them to work through the wings to give the mids a spell but I think that fine and makes for a more dynamic system.

The problem with our clearances is not the individuals who contest them, it's that there's not enough support. Clearances are won by the team that has the extra player there to receive that last handball and take off. It's what Hawthorn have been doing for decades and it's what Footscray did better than anyone else in the finals last year -- plus the spread to capitalise on the swarm.

We’ve been substandard for years and we’ll stay that way until we master that style and do it better than anyone else.

If you watch our set up we don’t hit the ball anywhere near our spare who is always on the defensive side.As to why we have the spare there its a mystery may as well send him around and sit on there spare me thinks!

Jobe likes to play defensive side because he can dictate the stoppage from there, provided of course that Ryder puts it down his throat. Do you see the problem now?

That is not a knock on luey but he is a different kind of ruckmen to Ryder who uses leverage (jumping early) to win clean carefully directed taps .

Luey prefers to neutralize his opponent and force a dirty tap to wherever he can. If there is an area where the players need to ā€˜gel’ and come to understand their new teammates this is the one.

I think the loss of Ryder and the impact that had on our stoppage work is a little underestimated. It’s also worth noting that port don’t really have a stoppage player that plays like jobe. Jobe and Ryder was a match made in heaven.

I never understood why port made such a big play for Ryder, I didn’t think he suited their style of play and I thought he unbalanced their forward line. With Schultz gone, lobbe out of the frame, a more mature wines around the ball and Dixon upfront (another trading choice I thought odd all the same) maybe they will use Ryder more effectively.

The whole Ryder trade thing really bugged me because we got a ā– ā– ā– ā–  deal (though in hindsight I’m happy with Langford and hird should have backed disco and Keene on draft day) and port farked their structure up. Lose lose, fark port.

What’s this in reference to?

We got cooney instead of using pick 38

Training in hot conditions at Tullamarine.

Our centre trios need to work together with one to receive, one to block for him and a sweeper if we lose the tap.

This is so basic, it is even done at reserve grade local footy. Hopefully it clicks next week.

I think with Hocking there and bigger guys back - Heppell, watson, Hocking, we should be able to improve in this area.

Yep I understand the dirty tap principle… As I said I hope they can sort this out or the back 6 will be in for a busy year!

I'm gonna maintain for the rest of my life if we didn't get sanctioned in the Merrett year we get Bont Merrett Lobb and fantasia.

We would have had to trade the Merrett pick to get the Bont pick. Much more likely Cripps, Merrett, Lobb and Fantasia.

still hit out of the park
