Trains

Lots of complaints a. about the 3-carriage train being insufficient on many days, and b. loss of the buffet bar. It’s a 3.5 hour trip…a buffet car is all but essential.

The old trains had 5 carriages, the maximum length most stations on the line have. The new trains come in 3-carriage lots, and to have 6-carriage trains is considered too long.

I don’t know what’s wrong with the NSW method of the loudspeaker telling people they must move to a particular carriage to alight. It happens a few times on the trip to Newcastle that I took only a few months ago. Have the driver’s carriage stop a carriage or two beyond the platform.

Where did I go wrong?

I usually drive to work but this arvo after knock off I want beers so I’ll be a good boy and catch the train.

Had to navigate my way out of State Library and walk across to Melbourne Central…umm…ok…I guess…

Train left Murrumbeena at 6.45 and I l’ll be arriving in Heidelberg one hour and seven minutes later.

Whoever is response for this travesty, gfy. Next time I’m driving, beers or otherwise. Don’t hate the player…

What is wrong with that ? Murrumbeena to Heidelberg is a lot of stations. How long does a car take, especially after a belly full of beer !

Given in the perfect world the apps say it’s an hour I think your expectations were high. 20 minutes to town, 10 minute wait, 39 mins to Heidelberg seems about right. The metro tunnel was never going to fix the requirement to go in and then out.

Did you use the underground connection or walk out of state library to the street?

It was never about the need to go in and out and my expectations were fine.

Previously, I went Murrumbeena, Parliament, Heidelberg. 50 mins. Now? It’s gonna give me a fkn stroke and this is after the rail upgrades.

Yes, I am a whinging ■■■■

I’m a ‘give me convenience or give me death’ kinda guy. Perhaps I need to hustle a bit in the transit from State Library to Melbourne Central (which is a ridiculous transition) or improve my route as @Tyler suggested

But yeah, unacceptable.

So you did walk out to the street??

Unacceptable? I mean this is purely due to re routing and the way the trains go around the loop. If you were close to a connection that you missed you could conceptually have changed at Town Hall and then again at Parliament to shortcut going to State Library (or have changed at Caulfield.

Each of those adds risks and potential for bad connections, but Dandenong ine to Heidelberg is obviously not a core route that was trying to be helped, so there’s potential inefficiency. 10 minutes due to a missed connection is unfortunate, but it’s also only 10 minutes. But you could also have had an improvement in waiting time at Murrumbeena due to increased frequency on Dandy line.

If you’d driven after drinking it could have been way slower and way more expensive if you had a little bad luck.

Yep. Some creases to iron out on my part, that’s for sure.

Don’t take me too seriously. This whinge is also partly playful. But yeah, the whole Murrumbeena - Parliament - Heidelberg in 50 minutes with no changing stations worked just fine.

The new metro here in Sydney is pretty nice - clean fast efficient and therefore no riff raff.

Lost souls tend to ride the train network because it’s slower to fill their day.

The bus network is where you get the real characters.

It is definitely a lot quicker walking underground between the stations but it is confusing if you don’t know it’s there
