Even if somewhere like Kamakura or Azzaās rec. feels a bit far, Yokohama is a good change-up for a cruisier day trip, with its waterfront and Chinatown. Youāre spoiled for choice. Nikko is another great bigger day trip from Tokyo.
We did a pretty cool day-trip from Tokyo to Hakone, 15 years ago. Booked it through the Tourist Information Centre at one of the main train stations (HakonePass from Shinjuku TIC I thinkā¦) Travelled on two or three different gauge trains and a ropeway to get there, took in the volcanic areas, boat ride across the lake, visited the shrines, open air museum etc. Sadly Fuji-san was shrouded in mist on the day. Iām sure Klook, Getyourguide etc. offer the same thing these days.

Weāre off to Borneo in June-July. Weāre doing a few days in wilderness areas, where internet will likely be negligible (whether thatās for reasons of coverage or conservation of phone battery) . Ideally, once weāre back in range Iāll discover that Brilliant Brad has been given The Chamindaā¦
If you are doing an overnighter near fuji, get a ryokan that includes dinner. Generally will be a ten course traditional meal all made with local ingredients. You wonāt know what most of it is, or how to eat it, but the hosts will always be happy to help and find it amusing when you have no idea.
With cycling too be aware the Shinkansen requires you to book a place for your bike. Also never seen a bike on a local train cause I think thatās not allowed.
