now they’ve suspended flights

I’m off to Italy on Wed and was going with Emirates but then booked another flight on QF via Dallas when the troubles started as a backed up. Cancelled my Emirates flight yesterday, which was always the more sensible choice.

and last night’s Emirates Melb to Dubai is circling Dubai

@Aceman - any idea what’ll happen to this and the other Aust to Dubai flights that are already there??

The Melbourne to a Dubai flight was diverted to DWC.

Dependant on fuel loads etc flights are in a holding pattern as they try to get Dubai open again. Some being to diverted to DWC or Abu Dhabi

Just over two months till my Emirates flight to Paris.

Hopefully it’s settled down by then.

feels like Iran would be spent by then

Onsens, minimal to no tipping, and don’t walk and eat.

Thanks soulnet.

I’m taking a half day cycling tour to cover some sites but do you think a food tour is necessary?

I like to meet fellow travellers but I’m thinking with food it would be fun to just explore myself.

These tips sound interesting I’ll plug them in to see how far they are from where we are staying

I booked quite a fancy ryokan with an onsen in the room(on balcony I think). It was peak time and the most I’ve ever spent on a nights accomodation!

But it comes with some sort of fancy meal as part of the stay. We are catching the bullet train I think to get there too which should be fun.

I heard about the don’t walk and eat bit!

and an hour later I got an email from QANTAS saying…

Turns out there’s massive snow storms sweeping through the US that’s causing massive disruptions. QANTAS offered me an alternate route via Japan. Nearly 39 hrs to get to Rome. Given this was meant to be a quick and relaxing in and out trip I decided to cancel.

First Iran and now US storms.. this was a trip that just wasn’t meant to be.

If you’re up for a bit of walking a daytrip Mrs Azza and I did last year was down to Nokogiriyama, in Chiba province. It’s about an hour and a half each way (depending on where you’re staying in Tokyo) and you’ll need a few hours to see the sights but it’s worth it. There’s also a cable car to take you to the top if you wanna save your legs.

You’ll find awesome views (on clear days you can see Fuji off in the distance) as well as some really cool stuff to see, including the Nihon-Ji Buddha (Japan’s largest).

QF21 MEL-DFW I take it?

That’s terrible news

Thanks Azza.

This is the dream type of Japan trip I have in mind(along with cycling).

This trip I’m on is more time constrained around Tokyo and to the south for professional reasons.

But if I do have a nice weather free day I can totally see myself exploring it. Going to complete an itinerary tonight.

I’m a slow rather than fast traveller and Japan is a bit of an expected repeat destination for me.

If your schedule allows it get yourself along to a Japanese baseball game. Even if you’re not a fan Japanese baseball is awesome to see live. Fight songs, bands playing music in the crowd - think a Eurpoean soccer crowd but with a Japanese twist.

Japan is a great spot. Been over half a dozen times and plan to go back. It’s pretty easy living in Cairns - 7-8 hr direct flight and usually go when Jetstar have sales on so it’s never cost more than $450 return for flights.

Hi all

My daughter is having a 2 day stopover in Singapore this August- any helpful hints/ideas for things to do/see? She’s 24, and happy to get out for a wander if needed.

And are there any recommended hotels in the ā€œmid rangeā€? Don’t really want to recommend her to a skanky backpackers!

Pretty sure @Heffsgirl is a local still.

Always very helpful with suggestions
