Travel Thread (Part 1)

If you’re going to wineries around TAS. Call in advance to see if the cellar door will be open when you are there. Some of them are open business hours rather than tourist hours.

I'm off to Europe in about a week. Does anybody know of any carrier that you could potentially set up in England and then use all across Europe?

Try O2.

Vodafail is apparently much better in Europe than it is here.

I've been hearing that one UK carrier doesn't charge exorbitant fees for roaming, but I suspect it's for their own subscribers.

Thanks to those who recommended Joseph Chromy. Arrived in Launceston just before noon Sunday with much of the day to kill before an early evening flight only to find that it had seemingly gone into lockdown(in the middle of the tourist season too). Still we managed to spend a few  pleasant hours sampling the wines and then the impressive food in the very busy restaurant.

WInes were interesting and we brought back a couple of the 2012 Chardys, a bit nutty and buttery and reminded me of the Willow Creek Chardys nearby.

The restaurant food was excellent and the atmosphere was bright and pleasant, I'd give it 4 stars. I've removed one star because of a quibble. The menu did not include the GST cost which they added onto the bill later. Not sure if this is a common Tassie practice but we also ate at Stanley's On The Bay, which incidently is another very nice place to dine, and they definitely didn't. A bit of an irritant at cough up time.

I remember when they first introduced the GST and I went to the local chip shop and asked for 5 bucks of chips holding out the note. The boss said fine, but 5 dollars chips now costs five dollars and fifty cents. He got annoyed when I told him to remove 50 cents of chips because all I was paying was 5 bucks. I wasn't the only one to argue with him. He doesn't do it anymore.

I'm sure that's illegal.

Yep, you have to quote the whole cost including GST. They could get a whopping fine if the tax office hears about it.

I didn't keep the bill so can't double check and be certain but I think it totalled the food and drink costs and then added the GST and my memory is that the listed food prices were as they appeared on the menu. I could be wrong. If anyone else has been there lately they might know for sure.

I just brought up the online menu and read the following in the fine print down below – “a 10% Surcharge now applies on Sundays and Public Holidays to cover staff penalty rates following changes announced by the Federal Government to reintroduce menu surcharges”. I thought it said GST on the bill but it may have said something else. Either way it’s a 10 percent slug I wasn’t expecting. Was a nice meal nevertheless.

Just got back from Costa Rica - do not recommend unless you like paying 1st world prices for 3rd world services

Which is unfortunate because the country itself is quite nice

Heading to HK, singapore and Langkowi for our honeymoon in October.

Any do's and do not's ?

Do pay attention to the new wife.

Do not pay attention to the hookers.

Any do's and do not's ?

HK is great, loved everywhere we went.  The Peak, Nong Ping, Ocean Park, Disney Land, the shopping, the food, it was all just tremendous.

But Nong Ping and The Peak would have to be locks, great days out and heaps to do.

We are spending 2 days at DisneyLand, think there is a hotel there so we are going to stay there.

Will definitely look at Nong Ping and The Peak. Thanks.

Going to Macau for 3 as well. Is it just like Vegas?

The Peak is great but best on a clear day. You can take a cable car one way, take a bus the other. In the bus get up on the top deck and take the front seat, spectacular views all the way. The bus stop for going up can be a bit hard to find, but easy to locate for coming down. lf it is cloudy and overcast think about going somewhere else instead.

Macao isn't only about the casinos, although there are plenty. lt has a number of galleries and museums as well. They used to do free tourist maps each month or so that had a list of the latest exhibitions coming to town. Most of them are free to get into as well. Well worth asking around. Wynn's has a great light show on the hour, but l won't spoil it for you. The Venetian is worth it for an indoor gondola ride. When are you coming over? l live just across the border in Zhuhai.

End of October start for 3 weeks.

Agree with the Captain about Macau, plenty of ■■■ architecture but then just behind the “in your face” glitz and overkill is a charming ex Portuguese colony. My better half who is an aficionado of the egg tart loved the Macau version that she believed was a hybrid of the Portuguese and Chinese tarts. HK is THE place to sample the Chinese version she tells me, although Maxim’s in Little Bourke provide a more than acceptable alternative.
If you’re a foody on a budget I think HK has the cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world, a dumpling house called Tim Ho Wan. I’ll definitely seek it out when I go back although I gather you have to line up for while.
PS The tarts referred to are of the cake variety.

OK, ta.  What did you get up to there?

Been thinking about Central America for a while.  Been anywhere else in CA?  Nicaragua?

We went to Guatemala in 2000.  It was great, if a little tense.

Yeh we stayed at the Hotel there.  Service was incredible and the massive restaurant we just ate and ate and ate.  Was awesome.  I think I enjoyed Disneyland more than my Kids.
