My daughter is climbing to Everest base camp in a couple of weeks. She has hired a local guide and sherpa. Have any Blitzers done this trip and any advice? I must admit I am getting quite nervous on her behalf.
Macquarie debit card has no transaction fees on overseas purchases. Great value.
Ask her to remove her rubbish. Everest is slowly becoming a rubbish tip.
For travel in Nepal:
Iād recommend registering with the Embassy and getting on to the SMS system of notifications of alerts if conditions change.
Details, including 24 hour consular service, are available on the site of the Australian Embassy Nepal.
Please post some of her trip on here after she has finished it. Itās one thing that has always intrigued me as I have never done it despite visiting Nepal several times.
As @bigallan said please register with the embassy. Makes sure you read through the travel insurance carefully. There is a scam to get people down the mountain on helicopters at enormous cost - when not necessary.
Pfft, itās not even in the red
Seriously, the āclimbā she is taking is pretty markedly not steep. As long as sheās OK with altitude itās mostly a job of pacing yourself.
Iāve only trekked to 4450m, so I know nothing. Breathless but certainly no sickness. See if older me dies at 4000 climbing to see this in six weeks time (you can get a lot closer than this photo):
That climb is up Acatenango; the photo is of Volcan Fuego. Yes, it means what you think it means.
Iām planning to do the Acatenango overnight hike in Feb. Still juggling final parts of Belize/ Guatemala itinerary. Nearly there.
Also, if oxygen is included, make sure the tanks are full.
Thanks. Thatās really good advice I hadnāt even thought of. Iāll make sure she does it.
I know sheās planning to walk down but Iāll warn her of scams. Iāll go through her insurance documents with a fine tooth comb. Thanks for the advice.
Has she gone to the travel doctor? Vaccinations up to date? Iām sure she has medication for altitude sickness, diarrhoea, water purification etc? Comprehensive first aid kit. Know whete the hospital is.
Does she have permits organised through the tour group?
A close family friend just came back from a trek. She had an amazing time.
Sheās had so many vaccinations she looks like a pin cushion. She said the rabies one was the worst. Iāll have to check with her on permits. She went through a specialist travel agent so Iām guessing sheās got the right ones but again great advice.
Yeah i had rabies shot recently and it really hurt.
I was planning a trek for my 40th but COVID hit.
Iām sure she will have an amazing time. If she cones through Singapore and needs anything pm me.
Thanks. Iāll let her know. Iām sure sheāll have a great time. Itās me whoās nervous!
Hope she has a fantastic time! Love to hear how it all goes. We are riding a motorcycle next Sept from Nepal to Everest Base campā¦I am very excited. Itās a 3 week trip there and back. (We canāt actually ride the last part as China does not allow bikes up there, but it will be wonderful nevertheless.)
Today I am at Lima airport waiting to board a flight to Puerta Maldonado for a boat trip up the Amazon and 3 night stay at a lodge in the jungle.
Bloody trip show-offs
Iāve been to Nepal a couple of times, not to Base Camp but the Annapurna Circuit and the Gokyo Lakes, which are a little higher than Base Camp. Much of the Gokyo Lakes trek was along the same path that you follow to Base Camp.
The trails are not difficult to walk and she wonāt be in danger of falling. As for the oxygen, she should be perfectly safe at Base Camp height, so long as she takes it slowly on the way in and has a rest day when sheās at say 4500 metres. Sheāll probably start by flying to Lukla, which from memory is at about 3000 metres, and a rest day there too is a good idea because the oxygen level is only about half that at sea level. I did my treks with Peregrine, which is now Intrepid, and they were very good and carried an oxygen tent just in case. If sheās going solo with a guide, hopefully heāll be experienced. She shouldnāt let him rush her.
And she should turn around if she starts experiencing any form of altitude sickness.
