Look at this ■■■■■■■ Muppet.
At least I got it right…
Tried a Netflix series In the Mud set in an Argentinian women’s prison. Didn’t make it past the first episode.
Now onto one that looks more interesting- a (modern) German spy series - Unfamiliar. First episode was good.
Agreed … and I just know I’ll be watching this one to the bitter. A really good plot etc.
Salvador on Netflix is not too bad. It’s Spanish.
Was thinking that after watching You Can’t Get To Heaven from Belfast, the new Lisa McGee offering. That one stars Roisin Gallagher (The Irish Dry) and Sinead Keenan (Unforgotten) and another whose name is unpronounceable. Three old schoolfriends return to Donegal for the funeral of the fourth of their group. J Emmet Scanlan (Peaky B) and Michelle Fairly (GOT) also stars.
Watched the second ep of Unfamiliar too.
Luis Tosar has been in a lot of stuff I’ve watched.
Unfamiliar is also not too bad.
Just finished The Rise of the Raven on SBS, a 10-parter on Janos Hungayi, the Hungarian soldier who was largely responsible for halting the Ottoman conquests across Europe in the mid 15th-century. Mehmed II was the man who’d conquered Constantinople and sorted out Vlad the Impaler in Wallachia and reached Belgrade. Mehmed was the son of the great Ottoman conqueror, Murad II. And of course, there was Hungayi’s perpetual bugbear, Cillei.
A bit of Game of Thrones, if you will, in the battle scenes and the family squabbles. No dragons though. No shortage of nudity either.
I enjoyed it, having previously seen a couple of series on Netflix of Mehmed’s major conquests in taking Constantinople from the Eastern Roman Empire and of conquering the cruel Vlad the Impaler.
All the dialogue is in various Eastern European and Turkish languages.
I binged on this last week and also noted the GOT influences in terms of the violence, nudity and many layers of political intrigue. Like the movie depiction of El Cid, the politics and intrigue are played down if anything. Decent production values, touches on enough history points, but won’t please the purists because it’s source material is a novel, not documented fact. Left the door open for a second series based on the ascent of his son to the throne.
The Island, SBS on Demand
The wife of a wealthy tycoon is shot dead in her bedroom. The tycoon himself is also shot, non-fatally. Who killed her and why? Suspicion quickly falls on a clutch of dysfunctional family members. There’s also a Family Liaison Officer assigned to the case who is originally from the Island and has an undisclosed link to the family.
Set on an island in the Outer Hebrides, there are strong Shetland vibes, at least scenery-wise, but this is a much darker tale overall.
It’s a curious mix of Scottish Gaelic (which I didn’t know was a thing) and English. Nothing groundbreaking but at only 4 eps not a big commitment.
All the big stuff has happened now.
Hunyadi’s son, Matyas, reigned for a long, peaceful time, and I think all Mehmed’s action has happened. So an extra series would all be invented.
One episode of How to Get to Heaven from Belfast last. Still trying to work out how it all fits together. Bronagh Gallagher (The Commitments and Brassic) and Saoirse Monica Jackson (Erin in Derry Girls) have joined the cast.
4 eps in for Unfamiliar too.
It’s in English but it’s on SBS so qualifies. A Spy Among Friends has Kim Philby (Guy Pearce) defecting to Russia and Damien Lewis (Band of Brothers) as his mate who went to Beirut to try to talk him out of defecting being interrogated by Anna Maxwell Martin to work out if he was The Fourth Man. Dropping weekly.
Stick with How to get to heaven. Some brilliant characters in this show and some nice twists. Very well written.
I liked them going past the Derry Girls mural.
There was the obligatory You Are Entering Free Derry one earlier in the series.
Erin from DG (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) was a nice part, wasn’t it, Babes?
Unfamiliar - finished - it almost seems like there’s a second season possible
Two Graves (Dos Tumbas) - two girls presumed murdered after going to a “party” in Frigiliana, one of the pueblos blancos of Malaga. The father of one is a local gangster, played by Álvaro Morte, the Professor from Money Heist. Two years later, no progress, and the other girl’s grandmother, Isabel, played by Kiti Mánver, a veteran of those '80s Almodóvar movies such as Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, is more proactive and makes more progress. Only 3 episodes, seen 2.
Dead Girls (Las Muertas) set in Mexico in the 60s about some female serial killers, sisters who run a brothel, and one of them, played by Paulina Gaitan, is a quite jealous lady who feels neglected by her lover and hunts after him. Not unhappy about dropping trou either, the lady. Looks to be a very serious theme played lightly. Only 1 ep in.
All 3 on Netflix.
The Gringo Hunters (on Netflix) - a low-profile police unit in Tijuana aimed at capturing US criminals who’ve tried to escape over the border (not all one way, MAGAts - far from it - these Yanks ARE criminals). Seen about 4 eps, Not bad!
That Night (Esa Noche) on Netflix - 3 Spanish girls visiting their sister in the Dominican Republic. A sister has killed a guy and the girls bury him. Each episode from a different viewpoint.
