US politics - is weird (part 6)

I didn’t watch the VP debate (because why would you?), but the consensus seems to be that Vance won.
Just like Trump won the first debate, and Harris won the second debate.

I don’t think much has changed, honestly.
It’s going to be tight, it’s going to come down to two or three states.
It’s going to depend on how motivated people are to vote.

On a personal note, though, I’m very happy for Trump to keep insulting vets.

Consensus was it was a draw.

As a species, we are devolving back to greedy tribalism and Trump is just another ugly symptom of this. I reckon the collectivism founded on post-WW2 goodwill peaked in the 1990s & we have been regressing ever since (thanks internet).

Unfortunately, as we face escalating existential threats like climate change and war, we are likely to retreat further into NIMBYism to protect our patch when we most need collective cooperation.

In other words, we are all ■■■■■■, thanks to democracy allowing populist nationalists to appeal to the worst of our nature & lie their way into power.

You make some very interesting and relevant points. Growing up, I was made to believe that society was constantly progressing and becoming better with the passage of time. I think the impact of the Internet, and more specifically, social media has really shone a light on how flawed that thought was.

Our society and us as humans aren’t actually constantly evolving. We are constantly reacting. To our environment. To the media we consume. To the values we hold dear. And, in the case of the United States, the single greatest common element that we have which is the individualistic nature on which this nation was founded.

In many ways, the fragility of humanity’s behavior towards each other is the biggest revelation for me.

The Age is ■■■■■.

Walz did the exact opposite. He came off as a nervous, incoherent, unprepared wreck.

None of his points stuck. He appeared soft and at times pandered to the Vance. He didnt do himself or the Dems any favours with his debate performance and I’m astonished that is the take which the Age took from it.

One of the questions that Vance didn’t answer in the debate, when he was directly asked whether he considered the Biden election was legitimate. He spun out the time with waffle and Walz was not given the opportunity to respond.
Vance is a polished performer in public, known from the Netflix series on his life. But we have no knowledge of his interactions with voters in the community, compared to Walz’s engagement.
The Republicans have put forward two private sector salesmen promoting their businesses (Vance as a venture capitalist), whereas the Dems have put forward a President and VP who have spent most of their working lives in public duty.

A judge who has historically favoured drumpf in her rulings released the brief. Nice of him to deliberately leave that out.

I don’t get how it’s not an automatic loss when you say I thought fact checking wouldn’t be done?

Bcuase they’ve been conditioning their side for years not to trust the “fake news media”.

I never degraded myself by doing debating but surely the adjudicators call you a loser to lessen the embarrassment

Countries excluded from this year’s visa lottery, mostly because of the previous numbers:
Brazil
Colombia
Cuba ( the latest exclusion)
Dominican Republic
El Salvador
Haiti
Honduras
Mexico
Venezuela

Eligibility includes a requirement for level of education and previous employment. Outcomes could be known by May 2025. Successful candidates are required to go though a rigorous process, including interviews, to secure residency. Criminals would be unlikely to get a pass.

IDK whether Trump is proposing to revise the visa lottery.

a non answer is basically an answer isn’t it.
I took it that he thought may have been rigged. But smart enough not to bring into debate as would end up bad for him.

Democrats using coercive power over big tech to hide Hunter Biden laptop story from general public.

Also good bringing up 2016 when dems upset that Clinton didn’t win.

I think Vance presented himself as a credible republican candidate with conservative values and an active mind which, compared to the bloke who’s actually running, was refreshing.

The faster the US gets rid of Trump and goes back to having political discourse that is somewhat rooted in truth and respect the better.

This is the sort of sh*t that ■■■■■■ me off from both sides.
I’m by no means standing up for Vance here.

But this legitimately isn’t what he said at all.

People are just making sh*t up. If Democrats want to overcome the lying of the Republicans, maybe stop spreading lies yourselves.

Vance is extremely right wing, almost radical.
However, compared to Trump, he comes across as at least sane.
I’m not convinced his brand of politics will be successful, but in the USA you never know.
