Looks like America’s billionaires are fully pricing in a Trump return. The Washington Post for the first time has decided not to endorse a presidential candidate. Wonder if it has anything to do with their owner, Jeff Bezos of Amazon.
The next time someone here has the temerity to call the Dems the party of elites they should just chant “Musk & Bezos” instead.
Many of the staff, including the editor at large at the Washington Post are resigning tonight. Jeff Bezos has obviously made a business decision. He knows Trump‘s going to win and come back in power and he does not want to have his billions suffer Trump‘s retribution. It’s cowardice. But worse than that it is complete apathy and insult for the democracy that allowed these billionaires to become just that.
I fear the election has already been bought. We are just waiting for the bell to toll the night of November 5. I haven’t felt this low since that night eight years ago.
I’m not convinced it is that dire, not yet anyway.
But I am starting to see a lot of bull@#$ stuff happening. Tampering. Burning ballots, unlawful purging. I hope it will be few enough and far between that it won’t make a big difference… but there’s enough rogue operators in place to at least cloud the entire thing.
Reportedly, it’s come at a cost of subscription revenue for the LA Times as well as resignations.
It’s a bit like the restrictions on ABC reporters, what both sides are claiming, equal number of words, reporters are not permitted to express judgments on the comparative merits of the claims. A lot of their reporting doesn’t go to audio or TV viewing, it’s become a non paywalled streaming channel that doesn’t automatically come up on the MSM online news feeds.
I doubt it’s quite that definitive about who is going to win or not. But Bezos does know that if he endorses Harris and Trump wins, there’ll be retaliation against his businesses, and quite possibly against him personally. Trump has not been shy about calling for the imprisonment, prosecution, expulsion, or execution of people who criticise him, after all. He knows that if Harris wins, the processes of the law will continue as normal (and that as a megabillionaire, he is largely immune to those processes). But under a dictator, even billionaires can disappear in the middle of the night, or mysteriously fall out of 11th-storey windows, or contract polonium poisoning, and there’s no court case required before that can happen. Bezos is hedging his bets. He’s publicly displaying his subservience, just in case. He knows there’ll be no consequences to him from a Harris administration - democracies don’t work that way. He’s just taking out tyranny insurance.
The Germans have a term for it (of course they do). Vorauseilender gehorsam. ‘Proactive obedience’ is as close a translation as there is in English.
I truly think Kamala is going to win this. PA, WI and MI look likely to go for her and that’s all she needs. Bezos is just a billionaire doing billionaire things, it won’t change the needle without that paper endorsement.
