In a stunning admission, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, JD Vance, said he was willing “to create stories” on the campaign trail while defending his spreading false, racist rumors of pets being abducted and eaten in a town in his home state of Ohio.
Vance’s remarks came during an appearance on Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union, where he said he felt the need “to create stories so that the … media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people”.
Asked by the CNN host Dana Bash whether the false rumors centering on Springfield, Ohio, were “a story that you created”, Vance replied, “Yes!” He then said the claims were rooted in “accounts from … constituents” and that he as well as the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, had spoken publicly about them to draw attention to Springfield’s relatively large Haitian population.

It seems perfectly plausible to me, but without knowing the actual system it’s hard to say one way or the other. Which is why the DOGE guys were and are stupid ■■■■■■■■ arrogant vandals making big changes and sweeping announcements after looking at the system for 5 minutes and not bothering to understand the workflow, use cases, or data structures.
I’ve worked a little in cobol, but never with birthdates or really with dates in general much at all. It’s good practise when coding to never rely on the system’s default behaviour for missing data, and instead code your own. But on the other hand, given it’s written in COBOL it’s quite possible that this is a VERY old system and the coders at the time were limited by the performance of 70s-era hardware, and it’s equally possible that Musk’s fkg bozos just looked at the raw db contents and ignored all the code around it that was designed to handle cases like this and make it all make sense.

It would be helpful to have a bit more definition around ‘saving one’s country’. What does this actually mean?
other wise, this statement could be used to justify any form of abhorrent, self benificial behaviour.
However, I’m sure this could never happen in this instance.

To be fair to Trump, he’s proven by breaking the law in the most egregious ways over the last 10 years, to which he’s never been really held to account, he is correct.

This is something you’d need to ask the people who know the system and workflow, which Musk’s people don’t seem to have bothered to do.
But some possible scenarios off the top of my head:
-
black people born before the civil rights era when nobody in the bureaucracy gave a ■■■■ about them
-
refugees or immigrants from countries with poor record keeping systems (this is a known issue with Somali refugees here, which vicpol has not covered itself in glory over)
-
children of drunks, addicts, homeless or off-grid people whose births were not correctly recorded
-
People who have for whatever reason (house fire, estrangement from parents, etc) lost their documentation and cannot prove their date of birth to the standard demanded by the department
There’s LOTS of possibilities.
