US politics - the new orange wave (Part 7)

@Lawry are you trying to say that joining the EU is some kind of military pact?

No. However there are security obligations placed on EU members

What is Wwwk?

PM me - it refers to a weird stalker

Understood. Don’t worry. Forget I asked.

There is a framework for them to cooperate. There is no military protection guarantees at all.

See above I don’t have the energy to repost it all

I read it. I’m explaining why you are wrong. EU provides next to nothing.

Is this the true big picture we are heading towards?

Fifty years off the real date?

I agree Trumps attack on Zelensky is frightening.

There was always a chance that his flawed character traits and egomania could back the US into a corner that could lead to a nuclear escalation.

The only thankful thing for me is that his egomania here has pitted him against sensible foes. The rest of the Western world.

I came in here as a news source on the fallout. Even normally calm posters sound spooked.

The Boris Johnson tweet was about the only somewhat calm take that maybe makes some sense of whats going on.

The only other thing to be thankful for is that Trumps aim might genuinely be peace. But its too loose. Can he back out from here? Will Putin let him water down his position? Probably not.

But if the whole of Europe bucks up against him? What then? Maybe his goal is to get them to step up and he’ll shuffle the US out financially?

As the Schumer and Sanders tweets indicate, this will have long-term effects on the US. He’s endangering Americans.

What happened to all the people crying that no one gave Trump credit for the good things he does?

Article 42(7) has been invoked once, in different circumstances, by France , after the 2015 Bataclan massacre. EU members stood ready to assist. From memory France did not seek military support.
A member aggressed can seek different measures of support, but ultimately it is up to the other Member State to determine the form of assistance within its power ( whether through the power exercised at executive level or mandated by parliamentary approval).
It is illustrative that Article 42(7) does not have the specificity of Article 5 of NATO in regard to the use of armed force.
Aside from Article 42 (7):
The EU did commit an army in Bosnia, but this was in a non combat role.

Lawry doesn’t like being shown to be wrong…he will twist and turn the facts to suit his narrative.

And eventually (as he keeps getting proven to be wrong) he will claim that he was misunderstood and that he really meant something else.

It’s his main play in here.

Rubio won’t attend the South African hosted G20 Foreign Minister’s meeting because of South Africa’s support for the ICC in the case against Netanyahu. He will miss another catch up with Lavrov ( also Penny Wong, whom he met at Trump’s inauguration).
Reportedly, the Malaysian PM has been advised to tone down his rhetoric on Israel actions against Palestinians, arising from concerns that it could lead to higher US tariffs on its developing high tech industry capability.
