The stupid thing about the Greenland issue is the local government has been trying to get international investment in their mineral resources for years. All the US needs to do to access those resources is build the ports, roads and rail lines in an arctic environment to a region with no population that can act as a local workforce. Greenland will happily let them do that.
The only reason it hasn’t happened is the location is extraordinarily expensive to operate in and isn’t financially viable. Which doesn’t change if Trump forcefully acquires it off an ally.
This is all about gold plating his fecal smear of a legacy.

We only have two oil refineries left, and they only exist because Government gives them a lot of dollars to stay open.
These two refineries can only make about 20% of our petrol needs.
Maybe part of the idea of having a reserve is that it’s “offsite.” Like putting documents in a safe deposit box in case your house burns down.
But you’d think New Zealand would be a smarter idea.

That’s not entirely true.
There is a current deal that was signed in 2021 where the government contributes if margins are low and they run at a loss.
They’ve only been on the receiving end of that support this year (oops, last year now 
), briefly.

We don’t produce enough crude to run those two refineries. It’s a choice between importing refined fuels, or importing the crude. Both arrive in ships.
Australia is very rich in gas, but from memory most of the crude cargos I saw coming to Australia were Middle East and East Africa.
