Time waits for no man. A sad day to bid one of our greats farewell again.
Macca was a true great of the EFC. Saw him many times home and away. A real big hearted, courageous ruckman who’d run through a brick wall for his coach and teammates. At a time when ruckmen dominated and prowled the VFL comp like T-Rexs, an undersized ruckman Don McKenzie mixed it with the best. He had a terrific leap though and gave our rovers and mids first use more often than not.
With opponents to contend with like Nicholls, Thomson, Peck, Polly Farmer, Neville Crowe, Mynott and Ditterich, Schultz, Fred Way (I’ve prolly missed a few) .. boy, he had his work cut out. Never took a backwards step ol’ Macca.
Was definitely a fan favourite. Great clubman.

Don MacKenzie had a huge leap andd liked to punch the ball forward while his team mate Geoff Leek was more the solid tap ruckman. They combined in 1962 as a dual ruck option. Then Don went on to play in the 1965 flag team.
I enjoyed watching them both, I travelled by train out to Windy Hill regularly, but once and only once to Victoria Park, the most frightening experience I had as a teenage kid.
Great memories watching Don Play.

I remember sitting in the R S Reynolds stand when Don shirt fronted Tuddenham in front of the races. Tuddenham to his credit struggled to his feet but very groggy. Don was a bit like Bluey Shelton; both ran straight at the ball and any opponent who happened to get in the way.

sad I used to do a morning newspaper corner in Broady back in the day and Don was a bus driver after he finished playing . he used to drive past and stick his huge hand out the window for 4 papers
