Reading the death notices of the Herald-Sun the other day I stumbled upon the death of Essendon premiership player and 1952 Stawell Gift winner Lance Mann during the week.

Admit it, you were reading the obituaries just in case you turned up there, right?
That’s sad. I am old enough to remember him from his last couple of seasons when he returned after a few years in the bush. He had lost a bit of pace by that stage and spent most of his time in the back pocket, but he was still a dasher and stood out with his blonde hair. He coached our reserves for a while after retiring at the end of 1959.
