Vale Shane Warne

True MacGill is a top 5 leg spinner in 150 years of test cricket. My best 5 in a rough order are:

  1. Warne
  2. Grimmett
  3. O’Reilly
  4. Benaud
  5. MacGill

Apologies to Arthur Mailey

Cullen Bailey for mine

I don’t want to detract from the thread, but…genuinely good.
He sits between Thomson and Hughes for Test wickets, from similar number of Tests and a similar average and strike rate.

Mad that their careers coincided given how rare good leg spinners are.

The great thing about Warnie was that he always represented Victoria, even when he could have taken long breaks.

He loved getting back to the MCG and playing with the Victorian boys.

After Bill, he was Victoria’s #1 fan.

Edit: ‘was’ is still freaking me out. Still can’t deal.

Watching all the tributes today and was going ok until I saw Isa Guha and Michael Vaughan

It still hasn’t sunk in

One of the main reasons I love cricket. Such a devastating loss.

Absolute genius cricketer, all that saw him bowl were very lucky

So many awesome memories that always bought me happiness are now tinged with sadness

Still can’t believe it

Can we retrospectively give Warnie his ton?

Disturbingly I think I cried more that day, than today

I’m sure St. Kilda will do an amazing tribute tonight.

Couldn’t believe it when they dig up the old footage and found Vettori bowled a no ball.

I’m genuine, by the way.
In this one case I’d like to see them change it to centuries: one. Put an asterisk next to it.

Bloody no ball. I think that was his biggest disappointment of his career.

No doubt it was.

If for no other reason than that he didn’t deserve it in the end, because of the way he threw it away.

He’s scored more runs than anyone else without a test century.

Defending the cricket ump for a basic error?
I am shocked.

No, not at all. Inexcusable to miss a 2” no ball from a bloke who bowls 80kph off 7 steps.

But even Shane acknowledged that he threw that one away.

Just knock into the onside for 1…. Nah, 6 over cow it is!

Thanks for bringing this up actually, it’s made me laugh again where mostly I’ve been in and out of tears all afternoon!
