VFL Practice Matches 2017 - last game was Sat April 8 at Punt Road

It almost seems as if you’re commenting on a different event, DJR. How are the hot chips?

Sounds really encouraging. Can’t wait for the wrap up.

Draper sounded good? How were Long/Redman?

Very encouraging to beat Footscray. Do they employ similar running and throwing strategies as their seniors?

Footscray mids appeared to tire in the last. Tbell and drapes had overwhelming supremacy in the last. Draper chipped in with at least 3 goals from overhead marks . Defence stood firm in the last, but the best of it was Ben MC niece in the air and with precision passing picking our players in space to start chains that resulted in goals.
Best. Afl players MC niece, brown, Stewart, Merrett, Bellchambers,
Good. Hocking , McKenna, long.

Draper neither in the bests or good lists? Seems, from the great live coverage (thanks!) he deserved to be.

MC niece disposal confirmed elite. This guy has improved a lot and is ready for elevation and AFL debut imo

Mutch and Clarke given a rest. Hepp a will have knee clean out next week and a 6 to 8week break.

I agree he is primed for a senior debut.

Sorry forgot drapes. He is doing well. Very well, for a 3 game vfl player. Who had virtually no preseason. He is taking clean overhead marks and is a big upgrade on gach, but needs to work on agility and speed over another presason

Great to hear mcneice had another good game. V box hill last week he was a huge stand out for me, his kicking is sublime. Sounds and looks a player to me

The wind actually started to go across the ground in the last quarter, which may have helped. It grabbed one of the shots that Steward had at goal early in the last.

Big boy Draper!!

Nope

Redman spent the last quarter on the bench with ice in a couple of spots on his leg

Long good but not dominant or very influential.
Redman just ok, but took a hit with ice taped to his leg in 2 places
Francis a beast when the ball went to ground, and ran out the game no problems. Did not mark well in windy conditions
Morgan. Got through a game without injury
Brown key marking player download back
Stewart key marking target in the forward line

Excellent last quarter into a strong wind for the boys. They seemed to run very well in the last and were employing the switch regularly out of defence.
My summation of our AFL listed that I can recall playing:

  • Brown: Dominated across half back all day taking countless marks and almost jagged a monster 65m goal in the third. BOG
  • TBell: dominated ruck work and took marks all over the ground as link man. Floated forward and kicked one in first and third I think. Ready to go IMO
  • Hocking: usual hard at it and in everything. Didn’t notice too much flashy stand out stuff but that’s not Hocking.
  • J Merrett: did some nice things across half back but still in and out of games.
  • Irish: took one very telling run in the third I think it was. Had plenty of it but his disposal was average. Weather played a big part in that though.
  • Long: started slow but got better as game went after coming off in second after a knock to shoulder. His last half he was everywhere. One very slick handball in the last to set up a goal. In our best.
-Begley: struggled to get near it
  • Francis: tried hard and got a bit of it mainly further out. His disposal was terrible today, I counted maybe 5 absolute shanks. Won’t see him in seniors soon based on today.
Stewart: very good game. Was excellent especially in first and last quarters. Looked dangerous in the one on one but also was presenting well up the ground. Kicked a great goal deep in pocket against wind in last qtr. He’s our standby
Redman: Very quiet day. Think he may have hurt foot/ankle as I saw him in boundary with the boots off late in last both ankles strapped but unsure.
McNeice: his last half was great. Took a hanger in the last qtr and his left boot is laser like and so penetrating. One to watch for mine.
Draper: The kid looks solid. Did ok in the ruck but looks a natural forward and has a lovely kicking action. Very raw but we have one to work with here.
Bird: solid game from the bird man. On par with Hocking today.
Morgan: I remember he had one kick in the third streaming out of half back that went about 65m with the wind but that’s about it.
If I’ve forgotten any let me know but it probs means they had a stinker
MIA today but at the ground were:
  • HeppA
  • Ridley
  • Lav
  • Green
  • The Eel
  • Clarke
Promising signs. VFL look set for a solid campaign

I don’t get to the VFL very often, so today was really the first time that I have fully appreciated the praise for McNiece’s kicking. Plus he does the other defensive things as well. Looks very promising.

Having moved Jerrett back there, drafted McGrath, who knows what happens with Morgan… I think we need to start moving one of them forward. Mckenna perhaps to a wing?

We have 3-5 of those players that would make their own claims for best 22. Awesome!

Thanks mate.
