But they’re not all that far ahead of us (and we beat them last year when they were!)

I know making sense and VFL fixturing do not go hand in hand but why did we not play this game when the AFL team was in the Gold Coast a few weeks ago?

The schedules are independent.
Otherwise, we’d never play the non-aligned teams during the year.
I think for major rounds (Anzac, Dreamtime, etc) the schedules do line up.
Gold Coast has given a debut to highly-rated Academy forward Zeke Uwland, the brother of AFL defender Bodhi, against Essendon at People First Stadium on Saturday after he starred for both the Suns Academy and the Allies.
The Suns made nine changes from the draw with Sandringham before the bye, with all being key players, including possible top five pick and 2023 premiership player Leo Lombard for his first VFL game of the year, No.3 pick Jed Walter, star ruckman Ned Moyle, former captain Sean Lemmens, ball magnet Brayden Fiorini, the experienced Nick Holman and youngster Oskar Faulkhead.
The Bombers lose mid-season draftee Saad El-Hawli for six weeks with syndesmosis and Sam Weideman to a three-week suspension, with top 10 picks Will Setterfield, Ben Hobbs and Elijah Tsatas all included.

Maybe Setterfield & Caddy will play limited time in the VFL and be back in time to be an emergency if needed. Sounds unlikely yet possible.
