VFL - Round 20 vs Richmond @ Windy Hill, 2pm Saturday 17 August 2019 - streamed

Sorry for the terrible editing. I reread what the machine wrote & realised I needed to retype it.

I switched ends to watch the game and also
Watch Ridley closely from high up on the Alan Hird Stand - I’m going to say he made one more bad decision in general
play resulting in a kick to the Tigers - I think garthwaite ended up with it. That was early in the game & I was right there in the Sun to see it. Anyway, given his size many like myself thought he was going to be more key back. He has nifty skills and is nimble and quick. But opponents work him over and he lacks the aggression or contested strength to hold them back. He should either play wing or forward. He played forward vs Seagulls but after a brief goal - he was terrible. Maybe he injured himself as I didn’t see him after half time.

I’d try him in the Zaharakis role and really get him to concentrate on reading the leading patterns of the forwards. Sublime kick.
And would be very tall as a winger.
But don’t have great faith in him as any afl defender

No diagnosis yet, but not good. Was sprinting flat out when he pinged it. Hoping for the best for him.

Huh? He had a minor hamstring strain 7 weeks ago Ben and had done a bit of a mini preseason the past month when he was already over the hammy enough to be back playing, to say the club were ultra conservative with it would be a large understatement, suggesting he was rushed back is just plain wrong sorry.

Yep. And it seemed to occur as the result of the bump?

Or was that just freak timing?

Funny how different people can watch the same game and view players differently. Quite a few on here have praised Jok’s game. I watched the game and thought he’s become a candidate to be delisted.

I was really unimpressed with his performance. I thought his skills were poor, he made bad decisions, and his only saving grace was his enthusiasm. For me one incident summed it up. There was a throw in and a melee formed over the line. The umpires tried to get play going. Jok put his hand up to ruck and nobody from Richmond did. So he was unopposed. And he dropped the throw in. With no body contact, on his own.

That certainly wasn’t Jok’s best game, however he has been pretty decent in other games and his skills seemed to be better in them. He’s pretty raw though.

Myers hoping for third time lucky against VFL Tigers

David Myers says composure and consistency are the biggest challenges of playing footy, particularly in close games like Essendon VFL’s loss to Richmond at Windy Hill on Saturday.

The VFL Bombers stayed right on the Tigers’ tails and trailed by just a single point at the last change, but conceded two late goals to just fall short of the win.

REPORT + HIGHLIGHTS

Despite the frantic and tense final term, which also saw the scores level at the 17-minute mark, Myers “didn’t want to bring anything different”.

“That’s the challenge of the game – no matter what, you can be consistent and concentrate on the same things minute by minute, quarter by quarter,” Myers said post-match.

“It’s really the same stuff I harp on about in the first quarter, and it’s the same I’ll do at training during the week. It’s the real basics, there’s no secret, it’s just getting it right under pressure.”

The veteran midfielder picked up a game-high 31 disposals on Saturday, to go with his nine clearances, six inside 50s and a goal.

It was his third consecutive appearance as a VFL Don having managed over 30 disposals.

With September just around the corner and the top-four now locked in, Myers is excited by the challenge of meeting Richmond in week one of the finals (date and time yet to be confirmed).

“Ideally (in games like today) you win, but I thought we still played pretty well. The boys can be proud of their efforts,” he said.

“Richmond was at full strength, so I’m looking forward to getting another crack at them and hopefully turn it around in a couple of weeks.”

VFL PLAYER REVIEW: See who’s pushing for selection

Having fallen to the Tigers by a combined total of 15 points from their last two meetings, Myers hopes the playing group will take away a sense of belief in them that they can match the best.

“We just need to stick at it, and believe we are good enough. Games like that are an arm-wrestle, sometimes you end up on the right side and sometimes you don’t.

“I’m sure we’ll look at a few little things during the week but for the most part, we’ll just do the same again and be a little bit stronger for longer.

He also admitted that while he hadn’t thought greatly about the upcoming game against Geelong, if the group “brings what we brought today, we’ll be a good chance”.

Essendon VFL will travel to GMHBA Stadium on Sunday, August 25 to take on the Cats from 11:40am in the final round of the home-and-away season.

Excellent highlight package at:

  1. The Tynan brothers have now played 250 VFL games between them and are still going strong. Luke Tynan and younger sibling Josh Tynan have slowly established themselves at new clubs the Casey Demons and Essendon (respectively) in 2019, but both were named among their teams’ best players in Round 20. While Luke reached his 150-game milestone two weeks ago, Josh plays his 100th match this weekend.

  2. Richmond’s rucks were game-breakers in a 12-point triumph over top-four rival Essendon. Callum Coleman-Jones and Noah Balta were not only the leading hitout-winners for the Tigers but also finished in their top three for disposals – Coleman-Jones recording 19 touches, eight marks (five contested), 28 hitouts and one goal, and Balta producing 18, 21 hitouts, seven clearances and two majors.

Bellchambers to put us straight into the prelim in two weeks time!

ROUND 20 STATS LEADERS

DISPOSALS (31): James Cousins (Box Hill Hawks), David Myers (Essendon) and Lukas Webb (Footscray)

They forgot to mention the third Tynan brother, Tynan Smith.

And their grandma in the abusive nursing home - Tynan Tothechair.

(I’m sorry)

A merely-OK-for-him mark by Houlahan is Play of the Week.

@Hoffy gets in first with the love-fest for Houlahan!

It’s hard to convey sarcasm in ‘a like’.

It was a good mark but overall …

Actually thought he had a fairly decent game against the Tigers, …
