VFLW 2024 Squad

Training in near perfect conditions, and we are definitely at the gameplay portion of the pre-season. Moving the ball to advantage forward, and applying and getting out of trouble, were key things of focus tonight.

I think 25 of the 27 list-confirmed players were there (no McNeice or Crabtree, I think). That meant Molan in full training, plus Scoullar Porter Robinson SFord Jordan Huggard and Ryan since my last visit a month ago.

Porter and Hart-Aluni were running mates all day, with constant but not huge volume. It did include at least one agility drill that suggested they might not be TOO far away.

MFord and Huggard also only running.

All three present today.

Scoullar (190cm) standing next to Jordan (150cm) is pretty funny. Both of them are competitive buggers, as is Robinson. One extended tussle between Robinson and Russell was fantastic. Robinson should be a significant player for us this year.

No Bailey Hunt.

Paige Scott was on the fringe of training for most of the session, kept very busy, and made her requisite overly-complicated leap to mark (well, not mark). Cain and Jacques made cameos, as did coach Wood. Kodi should take all of her dribble-from-the-boundary kicks in socks only.

Bannister doing laps and some mild slalom work as she recovers from her ACL of 138 days ago.

When they split into groups, it was obvious we have a LOT of mids!

Melnikas with the mids. Jordan forward (is a precise kick). Prpic forward.

Dani and Sophie were with the backs… but I’ll cope for now, as SARAH PERKINS. Leadership and coaching from the latter was evident, and she looks in decent nick.

Pretty sure the mysteriously-backgrounded Gallagher is the absurdly-athletic tall I noted last month.

Still a couple players I couldn’t place (they were not any of our new AFLW inclusions).

Kalani Scoullar has the nickname of “Killer”, despite being the friendly giant, so to avoid confusion we need to keep her away from our AFLW ruck…

MEDIUM DEFENDER, WING
Height: 165cm
D.O.B: 22-02-2005

Leagues: Coates Talent League Girls, AFLW U18 Championships

Ruby Murdoch is a hard-running winger who spent time in defence this year, showing plenty of the traits that earned her a place in Vic Country. After missing the first game of the national championships against Queensland Murdoch played in Country’s games against Vic Metro and Western Australia, including against Alyssia Pisano in the former. She showed her two-way running in that performance, largely performing a lockdown role, but also providing some run out of defence.

Murdoch is a clean player who can take the ball swiftly and has an athletic profile that fits the bill for a player who covers plenty of ground between the arcs. Her speed and agility ranks in the top few per cent across the country, while her generally neat skills provide important disposal retention in transition.

Though Murdoch did have a solid year, she still had her ups and downs in terms of consistency, and when the intensity lifted, her kicking under pressure was not as efficient. However, with the game on her terms, she can provide some nice drive out of defence down the ground, and play both an offensive and defensive role if required. With open space, Murdoch has nice technique and uses it well, and it is about improving those elements when the game is not on her terms to improve.

STRENGTHS:

  • Clean hands
  • Speed
  • Agility
  • Work rate
  • Two-way running
  • Outside game

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Contested work
  • Aerial ability
  • Kicking under pressure

Emily Tassiopoulos

OAKLEIGH CHARGERS
MEDIUM DEFENDER

Height: 172cm
D.O.B: 04-04-2004

A strong aerobic runner who plays with dare, Murdoch started the season on the wing, before being moved to halfback, where she excelled in different roles.

She was able to provide drive out of the back half and shutdown small forwards on two separate occasions at the national championships.

One of the best players not to receive an AFLW Combine invite, Murdoch’s interest has come predominantly from interstate clubs.

Murdoch has been a lively figure for the Stingrays on the wing, using her high aerobic capacity to run her direct opponents into the ground. At her best, she is an important link player for the Rays when going forward with her spark and creativity.

Murdoch is clean below her knees and isn’t afraid to be bold in any third of the ground which makes her a handy asset for any team. She will be hoping to consistently find her best form at Vic Country level having been a little bit up-and-down at Dandenong.

16 month old photo:

She followed the lead of Krystal Russell by rucking in last year’s Grand Final… and also kicking the winning goal.

Wonder how she gets her carbs in before a game?

I’d be shocked if Murdoch played on the LEFT WING.

Thank you, thank you. I’m here all week. Try the Rib Eye.:rofl:

ONE DAY LEFT (not sure what the deadlline time is on Tuesday).

Hopefully at least three substantial announcements saved for the final day!

Team launch was tonight.

Scoullar got a number upgrade, it seems.

54? Is she moving to outside linebacker?

VFLW numbers start at 41 to avoid crossover with AFLW (though we haven’t seen anyone in Courtney’s old number yet).

Not a big surprise:

Manfre, Sarah Ford, and Huta are the rest of the leadership group.

Add Christina Bernardi to the list!

Yep, that’s the mystery blonde kicking goals from every angle up to 40 metres out. I was very impressed.

She basically dragged Fark Carlton to and through a few finals last year (10 goals in the 3 weeks prior to the Semi-Finals).

I hope they release the teams to others before then…
