VFLW - Elimination Final vs Norf @ Arden Street - 1pm Sun 30 June 2024

Our midfield/team with those top four would be nuts.

Tamara Luke has also retired – I would have thought she had more left in her.

QUARTER ONE

  • Yes, Norf line up in the middle exactly as I (fairly uncontroversially) predicted: DiCosmo, Barba, and Tierney.

  • 1:05 It’s funny that kicking to Perkins one-on-one or on-the-lead means you win. How did no one ever think of this before?!?

  • Orritt and Bateman are the last to arrive, all the way from full-back, to credit her goal.

  • And then they stopped the game, and everyone lived happily ever after.

  • Commentary starts by talking about our low scoring relative to our inside fifties… in the past tense.

  • 3:00 an-ultimately reasonable (for Arden Street) crowd turned up really late for this game, hence Molan having having to jump the fence to retrieve the ball.

  • 3:30 these umps don’t care if you run over the mark before play-on is officially called. Actual “common-sense umpiring” where you don’t get penalised for the ump not instantly calling play on…

  • 4:30 oh dear. This ■■■■ venue hasn’t provided a space where the camera can actually see all of the ground…

  • Commentary noting the two best teams get a lot of score from their midfield… and without explicitly saying it, that we don’t. Yes, Mahony got two goals last week versus the kittens, but we are caught between Chaston and (normally) Molan bossing half-back and letting them have a chance to create goals with their big boots from the midfield.

  • We also have one of our biggest kickers in Hunt spending a lot of time inside tackling, and not being the one fed outside and making the opposition defenders crap their pants when the ball comes in long and fast.

  • Huggard onto the ball (not wing) is an unusual call in the context of the season.

  • 7:05 aaaaargh, Tassiopoulos has the chance to set the tone; perfect lead, straight onto the chest in range, straight out.

  • 10:05 all of the throw, neither paid

  • 12:00 I blame the commentary for Dojiok kicking straight.

Ha, this quarter summary runs pretty long…

QUARTER TWO

  • Hart-Aluni’s hands aren’t great in this game. Not wet/NT-enough!

  • Bernardi having the running shot from 51m out on the boundary. Greedy, on-the-full.

  • Commentators counting Molan fumbles: up to 4 after 27 minutes. Very not usual.

  • 7:45 well done umpire. Huge duck and fake punching-the-ball-out results in holding the ball.

  • 9:00 lovely ground collect by Morrow and feed out to Ryan.

  • We are still in this. But at 9:15 Tassiopoulos get doubled-dudded on HTB. She then gets harshly treated again 10 seconds later in a marking contest. Doijok pumps it deep forward, and a gross in-the-back of Robinson in the goal square sees perhaps the sealing goal. 3 of those 4 decisions within that minute were definitely wrong. ■■■■■■■ hell.

  • LOL, Gemma clearly watched the Essendon AFL game, because she goes out of her way to blame us rather than the involved umpires (who she concedes set up the play). No, they just ■■■■■■ us over 3-4 times in a minute and directly caused that goal. We had no time to have a sook, and we didn’t.

  • Says we “were trailing everyone to the footy at all times”. You just saw Robinson out-sprinting two Kangaroos to the goal square, which allowed them to put two hands through her jumper number. FFS.

  • 11:10 “dangerous tackle”, my arse.

  • 11:30 Molan is tackled by the neck, ump has a perfect view and says NO.

image

  • 12:30, everyone stops for the whistle and goes “huh?”… except Barba. Alana has her back to the ump and has no idea what the free is but keeps running. Got lucky.

  • Gemma says we are giving away the frees; I yell ■■■■ YOU.

  • 14:05 BRONX CHEER after Norf are pinged for dragging it in. That leads to good marks by Davidge and then Richardson.

  • 15:20 that’s not opportunity. ■■■■ off.

  • “We’re not here to complain about umpires — we’re here to talk about the game itself”… ■■■■ umpiring is absolutely part of this game.

  • Again says Essendon are distracted by the ■■■■ umpiring and haven’t bounced back in the past seven minutes… somehow forgetting that Norf haven’t legitimately scored in that time either.

  • 16:10 WTF was that?!? Norf player deliberately runs into the back of Tassiopoulos rather than contest the ruck, and the ump pays them the free 20m from our goal. Wow.

  • Gemma says our coaches need to tell our players that the umps are morons, and that will make them less moronic. Get stuffed.

  • 16:55 if the third Tassiopoulos decision 7.5 minutes ago was deemed too physical, then why do they not pay Molan’s big spoil now? UmpLotto is why.

  • 18:00 “Scar” is not going to die wondering vs Dojiok.

  • 18:30 unclear whether that is a mark (and hence goal). Robinson manifestly demonstrative.

  • Wow. At best 1 legit goal from that quarter, very possibly none. And the game is over.

  • I didn’t enter this re-watch expecting to go off like this… but holy ■■■■ that was bad. Across 9 minutes I make it 7 shockers against us and 2 debatables. Call it 7 and 1, because Dojiok debatably should have got a holding free not long before her possible-mark.

  • It does tell you how bad this ground is for watching footy… though the first Tassiopoulos tackle was incredibly obvious from 100m away, as was the high tackle on Molan.

QUARTER THREE

  • Dunno where the ump was for the Dojiok high tackle on Bateman… not paid, goal results.

  • We have no time clock for this quarter…

  • Just before 4 minutes (because the scoreboard is in the background) that is a sweet falcon to / smother by the face of Meier.

  • Dojiok did well to score four goals given she very often had both Orritt and Bateman on her.

  • 6:15 Meier is laughing at the ump paying that, and Gemma be hating again. Goal.

  • 8:15 this ump (she’s the worst of them) obviously doesn’t understand the concept of down-the-ground. Saving us five metres is not enough to offset the rest.

  • 10:20 Molan go CLUNK :+1:

  • 10:55 go here for the 100th VFLW goal for Perkins.

  • 14:20 GREEN WHEELS, drink!

  • There are a LOT of bad tackle calls in this game…

  • 16:30 you shouldn’t try to handball over the 191cm Reynolds…

  • 17:05 and now for Perkins to complete 100% of our score.

  • Commentary team would know why Manfre was “left out” if they followed Radio 3DJR.

  • 18:05 some yobbo calls for the kick-out to be called play-on after 16 seconds, and the ump immediately complies.

  • 19:59 Pokes to the eye are legal.

QUARTER FOUR

  • Reynolds is very tall. 14cm-shorter Morrow beat her.

image

  • Norf kick backwards 40m, ball stops a metre short of the boundary. So they deliberately tap it over. Ump says no.

  • With 10 minutes left in her footy career, Perkins gets to within 51m of their goals. Wants one more touch!

  • 11:25 Tierney nominates herself as a Shooting Star candidate. Fails to convert the embarrassing free, though.

  • Melnikas having a big last quarter.

  • 14:30 first, wait to see if Robinson gets fined a la Fletcher for touching the goal post. Second, that kind of kick is the only reason you’re not on an AFLW list, Dojiok. Soooooooo bad.

  • 17:50 it’s not suspendable, but Meier should probably refrain from kicking out with studs.

  • This game comfortably had the worst camera work of all our games this year.

  • I would laugh (and then curse) if, like last time, Norf are held to a solitary goal next week. And Willy are a hell of a lot better than Collingwood!

It takes more than the 21 on the field.

Hard to find bests, especially when any accumulation by the mids was very much out-weighted by their opponents.

BEST: Morrow, Perkins, Hunt, Chaston, and maybe not best but respect for Bateman and Orritt.

But you still support each other.

BEST: Hunt, Chaston, Mahony, Morrow, Perkins

BEST: Hunt, Chaston, Orritt, Perkins, Bateman, Melnikas

(Alyce Collett’s by-the-numbers articles very regularly greatly annoy me, but she and I very definitely didn’t list Orritt based on the stats: she was bottom of the fantasy points.)

Don’t worry – I thanked Gallivant on the day for the 87 photos, and the year in totality.

I’m more convinced on Perkins’ kicking style than the Gasworks “Grand Design” in the background.

Grass explosion!

Has Ruby taken to Melbourne ? :crossed_fingers: Or might she head back to WA next year?

Chaston did NOT get named in the State of Play podcast’s backline of the year (but they apologised for that). But Green Boots did!

  1. The backgrounds looks painted/abstract.
  2. I never wanted Perkins to kick all of our score, but if the opposition was focused on her that was good!
