VFLW - Preliminary Final vs Port @ Port, 2PM Sun 23 July 2023

Yep.

It was 4-10 at halftime, so make that 1-12 in the second half. We were not playing dirty, if you’re wondering.

It very much followed the Footscray script: we jump them early (but don’t convert enough chances into goals) and then a rapid rash of ump interventions turned the tide. Momentum shifted, and once their confidence was up we never clawed the game back (and in this case the frees split got worse!)

At the time (I have not watched the replay yet) I judged the Asian ump to be the overt shocker.

And yes, there were some obvious ones for Port also missed!

You are right it was the Asian one most at fault, but to only get one free kick in a half it is not only his fault.
The most obvious free kick missed on the Essendon side in my opinion, was when Port were awarded a free and the Port player twice pushed the Essendon marker in the face, trying to get her to react and a 50 metre penalty, and nothing was done or said to the offending player.
What is your opinion to this situation, I think the penalty should have been reversed, or at least a ball up.

So before watching (and reporting for the first time!) I note Huta was injured in the second quarter. Looked like the left knee, spent considering time trying to be able to weave at pace, but was pulled before half-time.

As I was watching from the goals (the wrong goals) for the second half I saw bugger-all, but I assume Meg also sat out most of the second half. Had 11 disposals and a game-leading 6 clearances in the first half, and added just 1 more of each in the second (but still remained the game-leader for clearances).

Essendon were outdone by Port Melbourne in Sunday’s VFLW preliminary final, going down by 30 points at ETU Stadium.

Despite the Bombers starting on the front foot with a solid first quarter, a sudden shift in momentum on either side of the half-time break saw Port Melbourne break away to a big lead on home turf.

The Dons fought hard until the end, but ultimately ran out of legs in what had been a taxing finals series for the young side.

Bella Clarke and Reese Sutton were solid contributors on both sides of the ball for the Dons on a difficult afternoon.

Sophie Molan was stoic all day, finishing with 24 disposals and seven clearances, while Grace Dicker concluded her strong season with a 15-tackle effort.

In a year defined by new faces and fresh starts, the Dons proved themselves as one of the most exciting teams in the VFLW competition in a campaign to be proud of.

Sunday also marked the final game in Kendra Heil’s VFLW career, after an outstanding tenure with the Bombers headlined by premiership success in 2022.

ESSENDON 0.3 0.4 0.5 1.5 (11)
PORT MELBOURNE 0.0 3.2 5.4 6.5 (41)

Goals: Wilson

Best: Clarke, Molan, Dicker, Sutton

LOL, we have a 2-photo gallery on the EFC site, both of which are Georgia giving Kenny a hug.

The game started in tight fashion, with the ball living in Essendon’s forward half in the opening minutes of the contest. However, the Bombers could not find the big sticks in a low-scoring opening term amid plenty of congestion.

Essendon’s forward half-pressure put the Port Melbourne’s defence on the back foot, and forced a couple of rushed behinds as a result. Neither side found the big sticks in the opening term, although the Bombers looked the most likely, but accuracy saw them take a slim three-point lead into the first change.

The Borough lifted to start the second quarter, matching Essendon’s intensity around the contest and gaining some territory of their own. Nayeley Borg registered the first major of the game and put Port Melbourne in front for the first time.

The Borough had their tails up and began pushing the ball forward with intent in the minutes that followed, and were rewarded with back to back majors from the boot of Emily Harley to give Port Melbourne a 16-point lead at half time.

Although halftime could have potentially disrupted their momentum, the Borough picked up exactly where they left off, extracting the ball out of the middle and pushing it forward, where Alice Campbell snagged the first major of the second half.

With Port Melbourne’s lead extended, things became much trickier for Essendon. Although they managed to stop the bleeding a bit on the scoreboard, the Bombers could not conjure any majors themselves, and all their hard work defensively was brought undone when Port Melbourne put one through via Chantelle Mitchell on the eve of three-quarter time.

Harley snagged her third of the day five minutes into the final quarter, before Essendon answered with their first shortly after, courtesy of Maddi Wilson. There were no more scores for the remainder of the day as the Borough cruised home to a 30-point win and a spot in the deciding match.

Harley was best on ground for the winning side, registering 3.2 from 16 disposals (14 kicks) and five marks in a performance that broke the game open in the end, while Kaitlyn O’Keefe (20 disposals, six tackles) and Laura Wright (12 disposals, 10 tackles) were also key figures for Port Melbourne.

For the Bombers, Grace Dicker could not have fought any harder, producing a seriously tough performance to finish with 21 disposals and a whopping 15 tackles, while Sophie Molan racked up a game-high 24 touches.

That is an accurate account of what I saw if you take into account the lack of free kicks that were not given to the Essendon players which were deserved

1-2-3-Bombers, followed by the new ritual of the cold hands…

Jayda Richardson gets it past the four players surrounding her.

For a couple-years-old ground (the re-surfacing of which nearly buried the club and the Council)… it’s ■■■■.

There is flying sand in so many photos.

Don’t die wondering.

Oh no! The Child of the Corn is coming at me!

We’ve got a couple ex-AFLW players (mostly barely there for a cup of coffee, and some are pretty new to the game, like Ryan) and then a bunch of barely 19yo kids like Prpic as our core mids.

Fede looked to have the goal at this point… and then ol’ reliable defensive wing Kenny was marking in their goal square.

I’m not selectively picking Kenny out; she just features a lot!

Anyone who picked Courtney to spend less time mid and Dicker to be our constant* mid at the start of the year… has amended their time capsule.

*she spend one game primarily forward, vs the Pies in our ANZAC victory, and kicked two goals.

This is close enough to count as a “snarl” for me.
