VFLW - Round 1 vs Box Hill @ The Hangar, 11am Sun 26 March 2023

GET IT OFF!

MORCS isn’t always smiling.

Hurrell’s first AFLW goal was in her first game against us.

Hurrell’s first VFLW goal was in her first game with us.

Ryan is scary.

Jayda did indeed get it off.

Busch

To quote Tierney, she’s “trying” to midfield.

Footy faces!

Wilson vs Trend

You’re not going to catch her.

As the commentary speculated without outright stating, Boyd did not have first contact and was not in front. I guess possession is nine-tenths of the law/interpretation.

Alana was pushing hard at the end to get us there, but alas no.

Awwwwww

That’s better.

by Aiden Tilley - Essendon FC

Sunday’s round one matchup of Essendon and Box Hill ended in a draw after an even contest throughout.

The Bombers were unable to secure the win in what was Mia-Rae Clifford’s 100th VFLW match, becoming the first player in history to reach the milestone.

The contest saw both sides finish with exactly the same possession count, with inaccuracy hurting Box Hill’s chances of securing the win.

Essendon were effective in sharing the goal kicking responsibilities, with the side seeing four different individual goal scorers.

AFLW listed player Renee Tierney was highly influential throughout, seeing the ball 21 times, whilst also laying 11 tackles and kicking one goal.

Co-captain Courtney Ugle was also effective at accumulating the ball finishing with 18 possessions.

With a 20 differential in inside 50s favouring the Hawks, Essendon’s backline stood tall and effectively repelled Box Hill’s advances all match.

Tamsin Crook, Alex Morcom and Bella Clarke were all key components in the Bomber’s backline.

The game finished in tense circumstances, where neither side was able to convert in the final minutes, resulting in a draw.

The VFLW Bombers will next face the Saints on Sunday, April 2 away at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

BOX HILL 1.1 1.3 2.7 3.9 (27)

GOALS
Essendon: Hurrell, Sargent, Tierney, Wilson

BEST
Essendon: Tierney, Ugle, Clarke, Morcom, Hurrell

The civil war within the AFL has started, and over a topic of actual importance for once.

Despite primarily playing as a mid during this game, Renee Tierney moved to 19 career goals with our VFLW team, and therefore equal fourth with Alex Quigley.

Her position as third for goals/games remained unchanged, behind Fede Frew and (small sample) Arthurina Mooren.

Even smaller samples: Sargent and Hurrell moved to equal fifth for goals/game, or to be more accurate “goal, singular, per game”. Danielle Ponter, Liv Manfre and Stephanie Asciak also sit on one goal per game.

For those therefore wondering who is fourth, that would be our centenarian* Clifford on 37 goals from 34 games.

*She’s not that old. Not quite.

LOL, I was excited for a second. Then I realised it was only the AFLW players included in the “VFLW Player Review” tag. The final line is the only real news.

Senior Head Coach Travis Cloke takes us through each players performance.

Renee Tierney

21 disposals, 11 tackles, one goal

"Playing mid/forward leading disposal getter for the EFC VFLW team with 21, helped lead our younger players. Leading the way with 11 tackles on the day which was a massive effort on her behalf.”

Alana Barba

11 disposals, six tackles, three clearances

"Slotted in really well and continued to help lead the younger players. Was influential when involved.”

Alex Morcom

14 disposals, five tackles, six rebound 50s

"Solid down back with a very settled back line, Box Hill pressured all day and stood up strong winning 14 with 5 tackles, leading the way with 6 rebounds.”

Mia Busch

12 disposals, two marks, 2 clearances

“Continuing her development learning to play on the wing using her endurance running. Topping the GPS with just over 9km in total.”

Nice images, in a weird order. Worth the click-through for higher resolution.
