VFLW - Round 10 vs Casey @ Windy Hill, 11am Sat 28 June 2025

Elsewhere, bad news is Pies and Sandy winning (the former well vs Hawthorn, the latter very weakly vs Darebin). But Willy also got knocked over by Werribee.

Third quarter did most of the scoreboard damage.

McNamara 39 disposals, Fitzsimmon 21 (and three behinds, luckily).

Hmm, Hawks kick two goals, needs two more. Go!

Cats have jumped Footscray (18-0) … they also beat them in the preseason.

Fark Carlton not doing anything to impede Port, though. Getting smashed, again.

We will be 7th and not 8th if Footscray stuff this up.

What has happened we were looking good for top 4 couple of weeks ago

Geelong beat Footscray 57-34

I legit said earlier this year that the Cats didn’t have the cattle but tried really hard. Them beating Fark Carlton and now the team directly behind us on the ladder… :100:, love ya.

Top of the ladder and lost 4 in row what is going on here?

It’s not often I get told I don’t put enough details into these threads.

Well, this is embarrassing. You know how I called Sophie McIntosh in defence and MaggieO making some visits to defence?

No, that was Olivia Lacy, Bendigo Pioneer captain (we chose not to bring actual emergency Eva Downie in to play back). Welcome to guarding big AFLW forwards.

Elizabeth McNamara has been retrospectively upgraded to 40 disposals (extrapolate to 60 over a 120 minute game) plus 8 clearances, 6 inside fifties, 4 rebound fifties, 7 intercept possessions, etc…

  • The only goal-kicker to not play at AFLW level was Liv Manfre.
  • Of the thirteen scorers (goals and behinds), Liv and Tia were the only non-AFLW players.
  • Plummer was only 3 kicks behind McNamara… she doesn’t, mostly rightfully, do that handball thing.
  • Of players (of both teams) to have more than two disposals, Ava Jordan was yet again the most efficient (90.9%).
  • Casey (well, Melbourne) had the top 7 contested possession players (OK, Prince Plummer MaggieO and MFord were also equal 7th with 7 apiece).
  • Casey* players also dominated uncontested possessions, McNamara top with 19, but Plummer 17 and Chaston 10.
  • Plummer topped the mark tally with 10, ahead of Tayla Harris on 8.
  • Manfre also quietly racked up 8 tackles (vs Fitzsimmon 9, Morris 8, Thompson 7, Jordan 6).
  • Our top clearance tally was 3 (Plummer, Mifsud, and Bernardi) – Casey* had tallies of 8, 5,5 4, 5 and 3.
  • Part of that was being destroyed in the hit-outs 54-14 – both of the Demon’s first two rucks (one AFLW-listed) had more than twice as many as Layla Prince.
  • Plummer equalled McNamara for top inside fifties (6).
  • Rebounds topped by MFord and Chaston (7), with ex-Don Tegan Williams next with 6.
  • MFord equalled McNamara for intercept possessions (7).
  • Drew Ryan again least-busy for us. Especially without Albrecht, zippy Meg Harrison may have been handier. And Ryan wasn’t (at least some of the time) playing on someone bigger than herself.
  • Jordan equalled McNamara on favour from the umps (both 3-0).

The good news is that, especially if Melbourne continues to stack the Casey team even just for one more week, FCFC could finish last.

  • Casey need to beat Geelong at home next week and then not get their percentage trashed in the final three weeks (Pies, Norf, Port).
  • Geelong then need to steal a win vs Sandy (only two goals this week in perfect conditions) or Darebin (one this week).
  • FCFC have the Pies, Dogs, Darebin, and Hawks. Dogs and Darebin can beat them, and the other two should reduce their already crap percentage.

Thanks to this game against Melbourne AFLW instead of the winless Casey, I predict we’ll finish seventh (on percentage) rather than fourth. But losing to Port in round one despite domination, and Willy last week, were the moments we actually controlled that might lead to us missing finals for the first time since 2019.

All despite we (in a straight VFLW-vs-VFLW match) beating the reigning and most likely back-to-back premiers…

Thanks for reports and analysis

Manfre extends her VFLW goal lead on Davidge to 5. They sit 3rd and 5th for the team (Frew, Clifford, Manfre, CBomb, Davidge/Tierney/Quigley) – Davidge needs four in four weeks (+ finals?) to pass McIntosh.

Recovering this from the Windy Hill thread:

Lily Bateman NOT on crutches, yay.

Neither is Chloe Prpic.

Jayda gets first/only dibs?

QUARTER ONE

  • The start of the game features Brooke Plummer’s first C”B”A with us. She goes on to be (spoiler) our BOG
  • Chaston immediately running back with the ball into trouble.
  • Commentary takes only 30 seconds to say “Melb… uh, Casey”. To be fair, Zanker had just marked.
  • “back from where it came from”… mate, that is not the correct phrase
  • 4:40 Tayla Harris does some decent damage by shoving sFord into her teammate
  • In the first six minutes Tayla is marked up by Porter, Orritt, and Azzopardi. That seems… a bit haphazard? Shortly afterwards is in the ruck versus Prince, which at least is their choice.
  • At 7:40 the Dee casually walks three metres beyond and inwards past where Plummer took the mark. That’s fifty every ■■■■■■■ time, except maybe when this ump is involved.
  • 7:15 Morris fakes head-high contact (according to the ump ignoring it) then smacks Manfre.
  • Goddamn, people like decapitating Ava…
  • 14:00 Wake up, Porter. Uncontested mark for Bannan.
  • 15:40 not an independent sample, but I agree with the crowd that was HTB 30m out for SammyJ
  • 16:15 that’s also a protected zone fifty 99% of the time. Maybe she just hates paying them.
  • Some nice shrugging of pressure by Thompson then Ibrahim.
  • 19:25 sFord sprints in to scare the Dee, and then ChristinaBernardi goes BALL. Nice.
  • Can I take back that bit about this particular ump not liking to pay fifties? I have no idea what this one was for! Bizarrely inconsistent three (non) decisions.
  • MaggieO’s reaction to the whistle for fifty: both arms raised in triumph as if she’s just become Champion of the World
  • 7-10 for the quarter? I’ll take that!

QUARTER TWO

  • Perfect clearance to start the second quarter: Prince handball out, Melnikas handball over, Ava off to the races.
  • 2:40 Hey look, that ump found a very weak fifty for them from the wing. Zero malice, zero damage.
  • Azzopardi marks strongly at the front of the pack to repel, though.
  • 3:35 LOL!!! That ump gets falconed by Plummer from forty metres away… and it bounces off her perfectly to Eva Harris :100:
  • Must be her excuse for this immediately afterwards…

  • Jordan has Zanker fully under control at the stoppage.

image

  • 5:20 Ryan could have forced this contest out of bounds. Instead, she equivocates and concedes a mark thirty metres out.
  • 28.5 minutes into the game, Melbourne lead by just 5 points.
  • 9:45 I predicted someone would get confused by the prematurely-removed fencing where the new AF:L-standard interchange mansion will be. In this case, no damage.
  • And Porter is left one-on-one in the square versus the 16cm-taller Georgia Gall to concede the mark and goal (MFord was on the headphones at the bench at the time). To be fair, Orritt and a couple-days-past-18yo debutant Lacy were our biggest defenders even possible at that moment, and they would both have been conceding 14cm… MFord having a rest, Molan injured, Robinson injured, Bateman injured, whaddya gonna do? Pay attention, Nino.
  • Eva Harris gets her first C”B”A with us.
  • Mifsud doing decent work as an inside mid right now.
  • I still can’t believe Tia MISSED. She doesn’t miss.
  • 14:00 Hey Miss, that was HTB.
  • 16:20 Hey Miss, dropping your full weight into someone on the ground is a push in the back.
  • 16:50 MaggieO is having a good quarter. And her kick from the HTB free perfectly hits the tiny window at CHB where Mifsud is. And then onto sFord. Problem is, Sarah does not have 35m of range and no one leads for her.

QUARTER THREE

  • Brooke is attending numerous centre contests, and never getting near the ball.
  • 0:55 that’s a pretty damn skilled rebound by MFord
  • “Tayla Harris to the left of your screen and he/she has… missed”. Ruh roh, the culture warriors have something else to rail against now
  • (All of these commentary flubs come from the secondary guy.)
  • 9m kick paid by that ump. Luckily Fitzsimmon was kind to us in this game, on the scoreboard at least.
  • 7:05 Huh, she does know falling into someone’s back is a free. Against us.
  • Bernardi just works so hard to get the ball, al the time. She’s not being put out to pasture any time soon.
  • 10:00 Skilled, yes, but Tayla ran more than 20m (not just 15) to kick that goal. Blame the other ump for this one.
  • Commentary go on about Melbourne AFLW (proper) struggling when they lose key position players, without considering how that applies much more so to this very game.
  • 14:55 love MaggieO’s attack at the ball and opponent, and after the stoppage is achieved she jumps up and (minority) shoulders three Demons on her way back forward
  • 18:35 LOL at the non-playing Demons sooking about the free for the Full Nelson applied to Manfre while she didn’t have the ball.
  • Plummer had kicked it to Liv from the HBF, and then gut runs forward to receive it on the HFF.
