VFLW - Round 11 vs Hawks @ Windy Hill - 12noon Sat 1 June 2024

Elsewhere, Casey have beaten Fark Carlton in a see-saw-ing game. Likely bars FCFC reaching finals.

Darebin are struggling vs Norf (2.0.12 trails 3.6.24… but that wastefulness could yet be run over in the second half)

Ten minutes left.

Dematteeeeeeeeoooooooo has kicked two and they are 6 points behind.

And immediately Dojiok goals. Boooooo!

DeMatteo sets up du Parquet. Back to one straight kick!

Tierney on 30 disposals

Time runs out.

Bernardi definitely has brill vision. Slips through packs, and found unexpected outlets regularly.

Is a very good kick, so she will kick goals even if solely a mid.

Lots of videos on Instagram.

The song at x.com – Bernardi and Perkins kept them waiting!

Two games to come tomorrow:

  • Saints can scuttle the Pies by finally winning a close one (or just smash them, potentially).
  • The big one is Port’s 150th anniversary game (at home) vs old foes Willy. We want Port to come home hard vs Willy and the Hawks, to set us up for second place. Willy have to be favourites, though.

Video at x.com - sadly without the whole C2C sprint.

Fark Carlton might have won today if their captain hadn’t chosen to come to us instead.

Thanks to all commentators…

manfre should coach the forward line, terrific lead

Having Perkins means Manfre CAN just lead (or front-and-centre). The downstream impact is significant.

Documents goals, realises I have to go back and change all the “Bernadi” to “Bernardi”.

Obviously our two debutants kicked their first EFC goal today. Hmm, now I need a list of everyone who has done that: the most obvious one being Alex Quigley some 89 games ago.

Speaking of which, timely. Though not knowing how to spell her (original) name after that long is terrifying!

The formula is done, and there are 19 players to goal in their first EFC VFLW game… and it’s a pretty reliable indicator of a quality player!

Makaylah Appleby would be the only one who disappeared. But she had good hair, so I’ll forgive her.

This also allows me to do stuff like this.

You may have forgotten she started as a mid.

QUARTER ONE

  • 3:10 Bernardi selling all of the candy
  • Commentators must hate themselves when they call a player kicking the ball to themselves (it was Ford to Manfre, not Manfre to Manfre).
  • 12:35 Perkins has big grippy hands. She waves the ball around in her right. and then her left, hand.
  • 12:50 is Hart-Aluni applying great pressure for the third time in this game… this one forces an on-the-full.
  • 13:40 Tamara Luke just pushing Morrow onto her butt, to win a ruck contest.
  • 14:15 the crowd audio is pretty muted, but we come through on this latest BALL call. Ump say no.
  • 14:55 we haven’t got to the ridiculous CLUNK yet, but this is a pretty nice mark by Hart-Aluni. She’s taking marks, she’s running people down, and she’s (finally) kicking goals. The pace is demonstrated at 18:15

QUARTER TWO

  • Bernardi starts in the middle. Chaston does a set play to screen for Christina, but ultimately ends up with it themselves.
  • 2:55 this one isn’t a push. Lovely bodywork by Perkins to mark.
  • 4:10 Davidge just knows how to lead and mark. The kick to Hunt is also perfect, but slips through her fingers.
  • 4:55 LOL at all the Hawks just drawn to Perkins, and Tay gets the easiest “pack” mark ever at the top of the goal square. Kicked her first goal last week, doubles up here.
  • 6:40 ha, I built up Bernardi’s kicking to Trev a bit much before this first set shot. A 35m floater…
  • 8:10 I missed the Hawk being equally manifestly demonstrative at the same time as Perkins.
  • 12:05 a sharp lead, and perfect kick, to space (Manfre and Chaston). GOAL.
  • 13:40 lovely contested collect, one two, and then burst to open space by Mahony. Watch it all the way through to blistering pace (starts the chase 15m behind) and pressure by Hart-Aluni ending up with the HTB free to Liv. And GOAL again, slotting it on the narrow angle.
  • 15:40 Bernardi showing her brill vision and composure in congestion, and TAY goes CLUNK! Look at the beaming smile on her face when she gets up, and Perkins is sooooo happy for her.
  • She went on to totally ■■■■ up the kick. Nah, not really; last year I might have been worried she wouldn’t make the range from here! This one just drifts very slightly right.
*16:45 just watch Gallagher in this play. Good tap to advantage, and then she’s immediately pushing away two Hawks who want to approach her teammate.

QUARTER THREE

  • 3:35 almost-mark, but Tassiopoulos isn’t phased, and still gets it to Perkins. Goal ump just has to tilt his head back to watch it fly through. We got around her.
  • 6:55 Gallagher not gonna like this part of the replay. As ruck she runs to full-back, past Luke, who then has the easiest uncontested lead to mark. Dani is not impressed… incredibly bad kick by Tamara, luckily.
  • 7:40 Melnikas takes the free for OOBOTF and hits up Dani. Molan runs past, gets the handball. Her chip is a bit ugly but is straight to Chaston, who shrugs a tackle and squirts it to Tassiopoulos on the wing. Emily runs about then picks out Manfre… who drops its, but recovers and handballs straight back to Tassiopoulos on the way past. She makes an effective tap to Davidge, who pops it over the top and Ryan runs into 25m to GOAL while being tackled.
  • C2C, and Ryan ran 100m down that wing until she was given the ball.
  • 9:20 you can see Gallagher has a right hand concern because while on the mark she pops it behind her back so she doesn’t do something to make it worse. It looks like she got a finger stuck in a jumper during a tackle 15 seconds earlier.
  • She’s happily going for hit-outs with that hand later in the quarter (presumably a finger had been popped back into place).
  • 16:30 LOL at Bernardi being at all disappointed at being pinged by the ump for throwing an opponent aside during the stoppage
  • 17:30 I think I was being kind calling Hunt’s kick to Berbardi a “scrub”. It wasn’t that good!
  • But the kick demonstrates why you really don’t want to concede a shot on goal to Bernardi within 50m. We get around her; Perkins is again very very happy.
