VFLW - Round 12 vs Hawks @ Box Hill, 9:30AM Sunday 15 May 2022 - A DRAW

You don’t see us losing clearances and therefore inside fifties too often…

Today featured Danielle Marshall’s first* goal for us.

*home and away – she kicked at least two in the pre-season.

My takeaway for today (remembering also a number of outs), we played most, if not all, of the game on their terms - we struggled to get our run and spread game going at all.

7 - Tierney 14
10 - Dicker + others 11

Marks:
1 - Eliza Vale (Footscray) 6.0
2 - Clifford + Tamara Luke (Haw) 5.6
4 - Tierney 5.1
5 - Marshall + Nic Hales (Pies)4.5
9 - Radford 3.8

Tackles:
1 - Tamara Smith (Cats) 11.7
6 - Nanscawen 7.9

1 - Sharnie Whiting (Willy) 16.3
7 - Nanscawen 15.4
9 - Radford + Nicole Callinan (Darebin) 12.4

3 - Radford 10.1
4 - Zanchetta 11.5

Hit-outs:

5 - Nalder 22

Adding Zanchetta to the mids, and keeping Marshall back due to the presence of Tierney and CBomb should help?

The long breaks between goals saw our forwards get sucked more into the play (but the Hawk forwards were less disciplined than we were).

We lost the weekend, but not all of our teams are losers.

Team For Against Percentage
VFL 31 98 32%
AFL 47 105 45%
VFLW 31 31 100%
VWFL 64 57 112%
TOTAL 173 291 59%

And adding Heil linking up on the wing.

And moreso with @acat493 at halftime.

(And now I see the dog-chasing-dog bit you were talking about; the chasing dog being a Quigley/Renton.)

Surprised to see Ugle with only 12 disposals: she was everywhere.

Not surprised. We felt on the call today she was almost doing a tagging job. A lot of tackling, but no run and creation off the half-back flank or wing like she’d normally do.

Why haven’t we sign Courtney ugle up for the AFLW side yet?

Hooooooooooooly ■■■■, that poster by Frew near the end of the third would have been right up there for goal of the year.

And won us the game: drink!

I hope we got some good photos of this, because… well, just look at them all!

And members of both teams think the ball has done the right thing!

she.scores has photos, might release a few to us plebs.

Congratulations to Footscray for winning the wooden spoon. Can they complete the streak by losing to Norf and FCFC?

So only Norf (vs Dogs, vs Sts) can now kick the Pies (vs Port, vs Cats) out of the finals.

The Pies can only go down; they can’t reach 5th.

The Saints (vs us, vs Norf) are a small chance to reach 3rd and displace Casey (vs FCFC, vs us).

Top 3 is mutable, but most likely to finish in the same order as now:

  • Ess play Sts and Casey (0-8 points, most likely 8)
  • Hawks play Darebin and Willy (yeah, just lock in 8 points)
  • Casey play FCFC and us (0-8 points, most likely 4).

If it stays as is, last week we learnt something: Casey can lose to the Pies at Casey.

Ha, both EFC and HFC took huge hits to our percentage today.

The other side’s report (they forgot to mention we ended their winning streak as well).

The VFLW Hawks remain undefeated from 10 games after securing a thrilling draw in their top-of-the-table clash with Essendon on Sunday.

Hawthorn started the game convincingly with some vital centre clearances, but it was the Bombers who looked stronger in the early stages, taking the lead at the end of the first term.

The intensity notched up a level in the second quarter before Abbey Holmes put the Hawks on the scoreboard.

The Hawks faced a sour end to the term with Kristen Hay and Olivia Meagher both coming off the ground with injuries, leaving the brown and gold down two troops for the remainder of the game.

This gave the Bombers an edge after halftime, as they powered forward to boot two more goals and stretch their lead.

But it didn’t damper the Hawks’ spirits as the girls came out firing in the fourth quarter.

It was Nadia Von Bertouch who began the comeback, pushing forward and converting a much-needed goal.

Emma Humphries then pumped into gear and brought the margin back to just six points after a crucial major of her own.

Then in the final two minutes, Jessie Williams became a hero when she slotted a goal off the ground to level the scores.

A nail-biting finish led to Essendon youngster Drew Ryan having a set shot after the siren on a difficult angle.

After the ball fell short, the Hawks celebrated a courageous comeback and ended Essendon’s winning streak in the process.

Holmes was crucial throughout the game with 23 disposals along with her goal, while Isabelle Porter dominated with a game-high 29 possessions and nine marks.

Nicole Garner was at her bruising best with eight tackles while Sarah Perrott won the hit-out count with 18.

The Hawks are back at home on Saturday at 11am to take on Darebin in the penultimate round of the season.

HAWTHORN: 0.2 | 1.4 | 1.4 | 4.7 (31)

ESSENDON: 1.2 | 1.4 | 3.7 | 4.7 (31)

Goals: Holmes, Von Bertouch, Humphries, Williams

Race at bottom of the VFLW top six tightens

ROUND REVIEWMay 16, 2022

LAST weekend garnered some very interesting results in the VFLW, and with only a fortnight left in the season, there are still many eventualities that could play out as to who makes finals, and who does not.

This week’s match of the round was between the top two sides, and the result befitted the contest fans got to enjoy all game.

After Essendon looked to have the game sewn up at three quarter time, Hawthorn produced a remarkable comeback to draw the match in a thrilling contest at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday morning.

The first quarter was a tight, congested battle which lived up to the top two billing of either side.

For the majority of the term, the ball was in Hawthorn’s forward line, but Essendon’s defence was just too strong and Hawthorn could not capitalise and make the most of its territory.

The opening goal did not come until the dying minutes of the quarter, and it was Essendon who goaled first through Natalie MacDonald.

That score ensured the Bombers took a one-goal lead into the first change.

Essendon’s forward line saw much of the early traffic in the second term, but it was the Hawks who nabbed the first goal of the period through Abbey Holmes, and suddenly things were back to the slimmest of margins.

For much of the quarter, Hawthorn had the possession and momentum, but just could not score. At the same time though, the defensive pressure was so high from both sides that they were also denying the Bombers any scoring opportunities too.

Holmes’ goal ultimately proved to be the only one of the term as the teams went into half time dead even.

The first half was also a bruising affair, with a number of players from both sides coming off injured in the opening half.

Early momentum in the third was all with the visitors, as Mia-Rae Clifford got the first goal of the second half to re-establish Essendon’s lead.

Courtney Ugle booted the Bombers’ second the term with about five minutes left in the term, and suddenly the lead was 14 points, which in the context of the game felt more like 50.

Federica Frew almost had Essendon’s third of the term, but a bad bounce denied her a spectacular goal.

At the final change the margin sat at 15 points in favour of the Bombers, which in a normal game is not a lot, but in a high intensity game like this one, it felt like a bit of a mountain to climb for the Hawks.

In the final term it was once again Essendon who kicked the first goal of the term, but it came from an unlikely source. Danielle Marshall had pushed forward and kicked the first goal of her Bombers career.

It was looking like the Hawks were done, but try telling that to Nadia Von Bertouch , as she kicked her first major of the afternoon for the Hawks to bring it back to two goals.

The Hawks then got another through Emma Humphries , with only three and a half minutes to go, and suddenly the result was not so clear.

Hawthorn then snuck home a third for the term through and all of a sudden the scores were dead even again.

The Bombers had one last opportunity after the siren to pinch the win but could not make it count, and so the match was drawn.

For Essendon, the usual suspects racked up plenty of touches, with Georgia Nanscawen racking up 29 and Amelia Radford finishing with 24 of her own.

Meanwhile for the Hawks, Isabelle Porter lead the way with 29 disposals, while Holmes finished on 23.
