VFLW - Round 12 vs Hawks @ Box Hill City Oval, 11:30am Saturday 12 July 2025

Woods takes a contested one-hander. Amazeballs!

Only a point.

26-27 Cats trail.

Wow. Pathetically soft fifty likely wins it for Sandy.

33-26, 5 minutes of play left once they resume.

This is how you kick a footy.

70 seconds, throw-in on the wing

Damn it. Sandy win and lock in finals for themselves.

Engage Willy and Port Death-Ride…

Red and black-ish eyes, too.

They should watch the replay rather than the AFL team, if they want to learn anything.

  • Bailey Hunt
  • Emily Tassiopoulos
  • Christina Bernardi
  • Sarah Perkins
  • 2025 - Maggie O’Connell
  • Grace Belloni
  • KAYLA PEAKE

Yes, no one did it in 2021. Clifford + Dicker + Friswell + Slender kicked their first EFC goal in their second games.

Good happy morning to everyone whose team had a great game yesterday!

QUARTER ONE

  • Please ignore my game day posts: Plummer continued onto the far wing, with Melnikas in the middle at the start of the game. Ibrahim the near wing, against Carris-Brett.
  • Commentary immediately reflects my view of the day; that Hawk indigenous jumper was not designed to be watched from afar.
  • No one saw what Abbey did 28 seconds into the game, right? Let’s just have another “no reports” week for the VFLW.
  • Good early composure by Klaumanns-Moller – put her head down in traffic, collected the ball, and fed it out well.
  • “We’re right next to the Essendon bench, so you will hear a lot of noise. Already some positive vibes around.” :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
  • I like this repeat combo of Klaumanns-Moller doing the hard work (in this case, a smother at 3:15) and feeding Chaston for the break and long kick.
  • 3:30 love the bodywork by ChristinaBernardi to hold the defender out; she didn’t ultimately get the ball, but stayed present and when the next Hawk dithered, it was BALL!!!
  • And then the un-defendable pass to Manger’s leading diving mark.
  • While Liv is throwing the grass up to test the non-existent wind, pay attention to the foreground where Chaston is proving advice to McDonald.
  • As is our wont, one wing rotates off, with Ibrahim moving to the far wing, and newcomer Ryan on the near wing.
  • 5:25 Wow. Funnily enough, this HTB call by High & Tight will not be repeated in this game. That was ■■■■■■■ harsh. Hawks draw level as a result.
  • 7:00 Klaumanns-Moller another big effort, backing into trouble. MFord gets her first intercept possession.
  • Chaston’s kicks are chef’s kisses.
  • 10:25 I mean, it barely scraped the inside of the post, but it’s hard to live in a world where TIA MISSES.
  • Love love love our pressure from the start. While the Hawks are a relatively low-tackle-count team, we are ON.
  • 11:20 Fumble, fumble, bobble, bobble, GOAL to Peake.
  • 12:20 I maintain that was a deliberate soft dribble klick by Ryan, to avoid being smothered.
  • 12:40 WHERE’S HER HEAD, UMP? WHERE’S HER HEAD UMP! WHERE’S HER HEAD UMP! – you gotta admit it’s catchy.
  • 13:10 I’ve already put the clip up, but that goal by Bernardi is crazy good. Front-and-centre of Thompson versus two Hawks, sells the candy, straightens up and BANG!
  • SammyJ in for her first C”B”A of the day. Note that Chaston is always positioned well back from the circle, as “quarterback”. In this case, Tess Cattle is at the other far end.
  • sFord doing a lot of one-percenters. Thompson also great on the wing (even though the ump penalised her for one of four wins in a minute)
  • 16:30 Nicely weighted pass by Manfre to Jordan. And she smartly plays on to equally well hit the leading Bernardi. Where has this forward craft been most of this year?!?
  • Nice take and clean handball out by Azzopardi while falling/being spun
  • Chaston quarter-backing again with the intercept mark of a Hawk burst forward. She hits up MFord sideways, and Molan calls for us to calm it down with 100 seconds left. Kick to Azzopardi, kick to Orritt, kick to SammyJ. And then the latter just bombs to CHF without a plan… intercept mark.
  • Results in a rare Hawks marking chain to deep forward – before Chaston takes the bump to break that.
  • With five seconds left in the quarter, as far as I can see High & Tight just totally made up that free to the Hawks. Luckily we have enough players in the goal square to swat down the just-short kick

QUARTER TWO

  • I hate when they miss the first few seconds of that quarter. Happens way too often. But I have deduced who was in the middle regardless.
  • A chain of early wins to say “we’re still on”. Melnikas wins a HTB at CHB, Plummer contested mark, Davidge surprise drop but goes again and via our best players it gets to MFord to hit up the leading Bernardi. And another undefendable pass to the leading Thompson.
  • The Loose Goose went on to completely ■■■■ up the punt :person_facepalming:
  • I am skipping many really nice moments and big efforts, because there were so many of them. Rest assured I am still keeping a tally in my spreadsheet and it will play into the Radio 3DJR votes for the bests. That’s one of the reasons these replay posts extend over a lot longer than 80 minutes! Last five credits (in rapid succession) have been to Ibrahim, Chaston, McDonald, Jordan, and Davidge.
  • Brendan Rhodes perhaps has our previous conversation in mind when he mentions Davidge is just 20yo at 42 games – still on track on replace Tamsin Crook as quickest to 50 games within the modern VFLW.
  • 4:05 it looks like Nat Exon kicked to the ump thinking it was a team mate. This is what happens when you wear primarily yellow jumpers
  • So much kicking to advantage/uncontested marks (and with very few of those reverse or sideways). Love it!
  • There’s a chains of marks to Ryan/Prince/Ryan/Thompson/Prince. The last is a great clunk versus the much bigger Price.
  • She hands the ball off to Thompson, who completely ■■■■■ up the kick… but then keeps running forward and lays the tackle 20m out. Good repeat efforts by all three.
  • 8:55 Ryan intercept mark and smooth sidestep of the lazy Hawk.
  • Commentary is correct to note 12 minutes in that the Hawks would be happy to only be behind 13-22 (3 scores to 7). It could have gone wrong from here, versus a team that is right up there and knocked off a stronger version of us just five rounds ago.
  • Bloody hell, that was scary when Sarah Ford received the clearance and sprinted the wrong way. Luckily Ava warned her in time, and Sarah makes the nice handball to Downie for us to go the right way.
  • Love Ryan being back to her usual stinky self… no one wants to go near her!
  • A couple lovely contested possessions and handballs by Jordan – I bet that statistician called the second “ineffective” because Downie dropped the receive. Commentary dually and belatedly agrees with me.
  • 13:45 Peake to Davidge :100: … though arguably at least one Hawk squibbed that by not getting into Tia’s way
  • 14:35 BALL! Umps says no, but I add Orrit to The List of Good Acts.
  • 14:40 the eventual kick is bleh, but love the winning of the contest by SammyJ after she gets dudded by a bad bounce.
  • But Davidge does the rundown tackle, and then hits up Bernardi perfectly.
  • It’s a very wobbly goal
  • 16:40 Sarah Ford won’t get a stat for that expert tap out of the pack to Chaston. Does get a tick on The List.
  • 17:00 Thompson huge smother in our forward pocket
  • 18:20 Geez, that’s a pretty harsh fifty for movement on the mark. But we’ll take the goal!
  • Ground being so stupidly shaped I thought it was from 70m out, not 59. The penalty was the correct distance.
  • Siren blows before play can be re-started: would have been Prince, Chaston, McDonald and sFord in the middle.
  • I don’t keep the raw data after I award the Bests, but I listed 78 approvals for that first half. I’m pretty sure that’s the new record. At half-time Chaston and Jordan lead on 9, with Ryan on 7, Bernardi on 6, Davidge on 5, and McDonald on 4. Every single player has at least one mention!

So you did - go Bombers!

DAREBIN!!!

(I’ll be getting to the third and fourth quarter replays later on… AEW All In runs about 7.5 hours!!!)

Context to the ladder:

  • Willy are likely to lose to the Hawks and Pies in the final two rounds, and end with a percentage under 100. We now have no excuse not to pass them.
  • Port will probably stay ahead of us by beating Footscray and Casey.
  • Darebin are not mathematically out yet. They play FCFC (but will it be their VFLW or AFLW squad?) and Geelong.
  • Ideally (near necessarily) we are beating Sandy and then end up playing them in week one of the finals. But that most likely requires FCFC to play a full AFLW team in round 14 to beat the Hawks.
  • The most likely first week of finals is Norf-Hawf, Pies-EFC, Port-Sandy (first team is home team, and as 6th we would be the only team with no access to a double-chance).

P.S. It seems FCFC may have lost AFLW-listed Eliza Woods to injury by playing her this week. Maybe that will scare them away.
