31-44, Darby missed for a change.

Moreen (?) a long kick to the face of goal, and it’s rushed for a handy behind on the three-quarter siren.

4.8.32 trails 7.2.44

Don’t let them score in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.

We’ve avoided GREEN TIME goals. In fact, no score for anyone.

Darby hits Heil high in their goal square, we clear at nine minutes into the last quarter.

Anderson (radio now know who she is) delivers to Moreen. Next kick onto Svarc in range, but a point only.

33-44

Seems like we are far more competitive than last year…

Stepnell kicks forward and ANDERSON takes a Jonathan Brown-style mark running back with it.

AND GOAL!

39-44

Game has four minutes left (ending around 13:48).

Ashley-Cooper and Anderson in some key plays.

Puruntatameri gets it forward but they mark deep in defence.

And we run out of time.

5.9.39 loses to 7.2.44

14 scores to 9, victim to conversion rates and Darby kicking 4.1.25

P.S. Casey belted Fark Carlton 50-19.

At least we seem to be scoring more easily than last season, a W should be coming soon.

It’s VFLW then VFL then AFL (Punt Road and MCG) next week.

Richmond won comfortably in the first round on the back of Tayla Stahl-Smith* kicking 6.2 from 9 kicks. Gotta shut that down; three weeks of losses by a kick with one standout for the opposition would be nasty.

*Stahl-Smith is a bank robber who got a fully suspended sentence two years ago. Free goals Richmond!

Stats are up in the VFL app.

We were much more kick-focused than Geelong (132+67 versus their 112+107) and out-tackled them (80-59). Other stats pretty close.

Moreen kicked 2.4 from 5 marks and 11 disposals. Unfortunately their Darby kicked 4.1 from 3 marks and 9 disposals to win them the game.

Bullas had 21 disposals (18 of them kicks) and a game-leading 10 tackles.

Fogas (mid) and Stepnell (forward) trailed her on 14 disposals.

The Bombers dominated much of the game but missed several opportunities at goal in the final quarter, while the Cats held on in the frantic final seconds to claim the 5.9 (39) to 7.2 (44) victory.

Given the chance to respond to last week’s narrow loss, the Bombers brought fight and passion to the contest.

Geelong secured its lead in the opening minutes as AFLW-listed talent Kate Darby booted three unanswered goals.

Although it was the Cats who hit the scoreboard early, the Bombers’ defence did well to stem their momentum.

Essendon came out for a fiery second quarter, while goals to Lori Stepnell and Arthurina Moreen saw the Bombers rewarded for their efforts.

The Bombers were clinical in moving the ball forward and soon got the game back on their defensive terms.

Kendra Heil and Eloise Ashley-Cooper impressed with their intensity and pressure around the ball, while Skipper Courtney Ugle’s run off the wing saw the Bombers’ claim a higher set-shot advantage.

The Cats again broke away with an early goal in the third term, but the Bombers were not about to give up - their increased aggressiveness in the contests and second efforts standing out.

Rookies Moreen and Freda Puruntatameri were outstanding in the third quarter, with their back-to-back goals keeping the Bombers on the scoreboard.

Essendon started the final term with momentum, while a quick goal from star recruit and debutant Ally Anderson (Brisbane Lions) brought it back to a five-point deficit.

The Bombers proved their dominance, playing the majority of the final quarter on their terms, while their defensive pressure kept Geelong scoreless after three-quarter time.

Natalie MacDonald led from the midfield with high-intensity tackling pressure, while Simone Nalder dominated in the ruck.

Lauren Ahrens and Molly Warburton did well to secure several forward entries in the final minutes of the game.

The Bombers missed their opportunities in front of goal, while the Cats held on to claim the five-point victory.

The Bombers will be looking to get back on the winners list when they face Richmond at the Swinburne Centre next Saturday.
