VFLW - Round 2 vs Saints @ Trevor Barker Oval, 3pm Sun 2 April 2023

This is the main event after the VFL game starting at noon. No warm-ups for you!

Stream etc will be at:

Saints are top of the ladder after defeating Darebin 6.10.46-2.1.13.

They destroyed the Falcons on every stat but hit-outs, where they got torched 26-53.

They drooped as the game went on (3 goals the first quarter, then 2, then 1, then 0).

No one reached 20 disposals, but there was an excellent spread, with ruck Margaret Kershaw on top.

Game is a 10min bus ride down the road from me. Might have to make an appearance (in the crowd).

League confirms we’ll be wearing our red indigenous jumpers and black shorts against the Saints.

Port vs Pies is the likely sole commentary game this week.

Mia-Rae is busy. Game is Saturday @ 12:05

I don’t understand how our joint captain is allowed to mix 2 codes with games within a day of each other.
Are any other VFLW players allowed to do this?

Other AFLW people do it. It’s remarkably common but also disappointing that they need to play multiple sports and work a full time job just to get some money.

Our AFLW team just grabbed someone who plays NRLW.

Previous compilation (updated):

Also worth noting if Mia gets on the ground, that’ll be her debut. Exciting. Rebels girls got absolutely whalloped last week so hopefully a few changes.

0-43, eek.

Their Twitter names 23 players, which I think is the squad and does not include any emergencies (15 on field and 8 interchange)?

I liked some of our ins, but then saw the (all huge) outs!!

Capsalis out for them is useful.

Side note: Fede Frew has been named for Port Melbourne this round…

■■■■!

Not surprised. Fede’s family members went nuclear on the Essendon socials when she was delisted.

The Saints have brought in Nicki Cormack, veteran former Kangaroo Kim Ebb, returning youngsters Grace Hodder and Bella Enno and St Kilda Irish recruit Jane Moore in their five swaps

Sutton is playing for the Cannons.

From a selfish point of view, why?!?

Also odd to go into relative hiding two days before the oldies draft.

(Russell also playing for the Jets. I’ll be less vehement about that until I find out the quality of our many other new rucks. Though presumably they’re all injured or one-dimensional if they can’t currently squeeze into a 16 on field + 5 bench squad.)

Orritt named on-ball for the Pioneers.

Named mids brigade:

  • Ugle (26yo, 56 VFLW games)
  • Barba (21, 31 games)
  • Dicker(22, 25 games)
  • Busch (18, 2 games)
  • Clarke (18, 1 game; 10 days younger and she’s not eligible for last year’s AFLW draft)

We’ve lost 3 of our top 6 by experience (measured via VFLW games).

Saints are not the Hawks, and have a similar profile to us:

  • Cormack (22, 24 games)
  • Laing (20, but 25 VFLW games and just delisted from Fark Carlton AFLW)
  • Wrigley (22yo, 1 game, from Sydney comps)
  • Ryan (19, 13 games)
  • Podnecky (age unclear but experienced with at least 85 games across various leagues. BOG in the South Eastern Women’s Football Grand Final last year; kicked a goal in that 1 point win. Also awarded the MVP award for that league.)

Their ruck, Margaret Kershaw, is in a similar position as Meg Ryan – 27yo and a relatively recent convert to the sport. Both had more disposals than hit-outs in round one.
