VFLW - Round 2 vs Saints @ Trevor Barker Oval, 3pm Sun 2 April 2023

Ryan runs in fast to help her make the distance; gets the distance but misses everything…

And now down their end.

AmberClarke coming off the bench, going forward.

Fark. Pearson class through the middle then contrarily kicks to two Saints rather than the free AmberClarke.

Ryan really stepping up today.

Confusion on the bench as to whether MadGray is (a) forward.

Davidge comes off, has a dodgy leg.

17-29

The Streak is over!

17-35

Barba was forward, now back in the midfield

Saint overtly ducks into tackle, get the free. Extracting the urine, these umps.

Good lead and mark by HartAluni

Paige Scott is distracting Ryan at the bench.

De Angelis left alone, which results in the easiest chain forward to goal of the day.

17-42

Disappointing, 3 matches, 3 losses.

Hoping next game the girls can hold a few marks.

Deep sigh…

A good all round performance by the Essendon Football Club this week.

Thanks to all the commentators who let the fingers do the talking.

One player in the top twelve for disposals, and the very dangerous De Angelis with 28… yeah, it’s a miracle (decent pressure by the team as a whole) that we were tied until just before three quarter time.

Arguably the best part of the day was Meg Ryan’s continued improvement. While last week was decent, this was easily her most complete game.

She had a game-high 8 clearances (Barba was our next best with 3), 7 tackles, and despite her usual aggression went 2-0 for frees as a nice bonus.

Also, little stick figure Huta got a hit-out? Ha!

I failed to record the three-quarter time stats, but the first quarter was the only one where we went close to even (44-53) for disposals. It’s no coincidence that was also the only quarter we actually kicked goals.

Sargent was again good, but we lost huge forward experience and talent: no Clifford, no Wilson, no Tierney for most of the game, Manfre a late withdrawal. No overt pace in the absence of CBomb and NatMac, and Dicker mostly in the midfield. Mel Bateman, one of our now oldest players, did a cameo as CHF, but faded as quality supply disappeared.

Despite Meg Ryan’s efforts we were killed inside, and then killed worse outside.

We did apply decent pressure until the closing minutes when the score blew out. Dicker was part of that with a game-leading 12 tackles.

(Side note: Sutton had a modest 15 disposals for the Cannons this weekend. Russell destroyed her Tassie opponents with 48 hit-outs – her best opponent had 8.)
