VFLW - Round 4 vs Willy @ The Hangar, 11AM Saturday 5 Mar 2022

You’re not meant to be able to soccer a footy like that…

I underplayed the dancing. Geez.

McIntosh v Whiting was an interesting match up physically.

Damn it. From this angle you can see how we were robbed of another freak goal.

I start this a tad earlier with the Crook rebound.

P.S. We beat FCFC by 52, not 42.

Started earlier so you can see the worst umpiring (non-) call of the day. Runs 25m without a bounce then throws it. PLAY ON.

Umpire pls.

You can see why that front-and-centre wasn’t a goal… took a bit long and got destroyed by Marshall.

Stepnell attempting the deadly Heart Punch.

From Frew…

… to Tierney!

“Just a couple of things we need to fix up” … forward line and back line?

Seagulls VFLW Senior coach Penny Cula-Reid couldn’t fault the effort of her troops against Essendon on Saturday, despite going down to the Bombers by 52 points, 10.5 (65) to 2.1 (13).

The Seagulls had the pressure and intensity, but Essendon- who will be joining the AFLW later this year showed their class in the victory.

Cula-Reid said the game shows that the defensive strategy is working but needs to be executed more consistently.

“We’ve been working on our defensive strategy, especially against a team like this, that like to move the ball quite cleanly," she said post-match. "We’ve worked pretty hard on our defensive areas, and a lot of that comes down to the willingness to put pressure on the ball. And think we were we’re executing that, but we just need to execute it consistently.”

Madison Blackburn made her VFLW debut, coming in as late replacement for skipper Erin Meade, notching eight disposals and six tackles in her first outing, however it was Essendon who started stronger. The Gulls were held scoreless until the 11 minute mark of the second term thanks to a smart kick off the ground by Ellie Cleland to boot her second goal in as many matches.

Ruby Tripodi was a standout with a goal, nine tackles and 17 disposals across the afternoon, while Gabrielle Bidenweg-Webster worked hard for 15 touches and Stella Bridgewater (14 disposals) provided some highlights across the backline and midfield.

“I reckon we were pretty good until the first half of the first quarter- (that) was really good, (and we) let it sort of slip away the second half of the first and then the first half of the last quarter,” Cula-Reid said. "That’s where that really, really killed us when they kicked seven goals, and that is the difference.”

Attention will now turn to North Melbourne in round five next Sunday at Arden Street, with the Seagulls ledger sitting at 1-3 and eighth on the ladder.

“To the girls’ credit, Essendon are a good side, we’ve come up and we’ve fought pretty hard and we made them work,” Cula-Ried said. "I think that’s going to give us some really good belief moving forward that when the fights on we’re willing to put in the hard yards and really work together and stick fat.

“(There’s) good signs, but just a couple of things we need to fix up.”
