VFLW - Round 5 vs Pies @ Victoria Park, 11am Sat 22 April 2023

Quarter one

  • Check out the dog starting five seconds into the video… it covers 60m (???) from the left of the screen in 4.3 seconds.
  • My eyes hurt whenever the camera pans.
  • Nice bit of fence-pivot-ing at 1:45
  • There is a lot of on-the-wrong-side guessing about whether correct disposals were made
  • Doonan and her opponent are completely ignoring each other.
  • Keck really should have been a first-kick-is-a-goal player.
  • MRO should consider that there was potential for Keck’s head to pop out in the northern Atlantic Ocean.
  • At 11 minutes the bald ump starts extracting the urine re: holding the ball. The crowd isn’t always right, but they were here.
  • LOL at the Pie who decided to be second ruck just before quarter time. Thanks, dopey!
  • Ryan appears to have promised to take her top off after her first goal.

Quarter two

  • LOL at Wales quietly being demonstrative at the ump calling a shepherd in the ruck versus her (at 23:50)
  • Nice headlock tackle, Ashley-Cooper. Luckily the ump was having a nap.
  • Seriously, no one even thought of sliding past Dojiok and taking the kick at goal off her? So much space to do so.
  • Lovely work by Dicker and Amber hard on the boundary from 25:25, followed by the Pie crapping her pants as The Beast ran at her.
  • If we can afford to play Mel Bateman on Dojiok, then pity all their other forwards.
  • At 28:00 La Presidenta dares to suggest that Kendra may in fact not be trying that hard to get the ball out.
  • From 28:05 you can see Cloke micro-managing player positions before the stoppage.
  • Having Dicker as your deep tall forward, along with Keck and Tay, is not conducive to kicking long and high to the forward line.
  • Go to 32:00 to see Dojiok’s brain fade, and Molan scooting away in gratitude. The umps were legit very slow to call stuff in this game, but you don’t relax till you hear the whistle…
  • The two dogs are very excited when Wilson kicks our second goal (35:30).
  • Three big plays by Kenny late in the second quarter. And then precisely kicks to Tay in the forward fifty.

Quarter three

  • Camera operator needs to stop clearing their throat, and yawning.
  • Courtney nearly costs us a goal… but catches the much-bigger Pie nicely.
  • Baldy gave Courtney 0.1 seconds to divide whether to take advantage. Get stuffed.
  • She then bosses Crook out of the pack mark
  • Go to 49:05 to see how Keck did her ankle. Or a few seconds earlier to admire Amber’s classy play.
  • Dicker 1) using her momentum and pace 2) running her full distance without risking a bounce and 3) softly kicking the ball :white_check_mark:
  • At least in the third quarter Radford and Bates are on each other.
  • 57:25 for the ump ignoring blatant opportunity and failure to dispose legally. Great tackle, Dicker.
  • Example of Prpic coming from behind to win the ball at 61:00
  • Courtney again successfully pretending she’s a clunking tall at 62:20. And then, like everyone else on our team, failing to make a score from it.

Quarter four

  • Radford and Bates again on each other to start the quarter.
  • 66:25 for Davidge again showing she’s a good contested mark (this one running back with the ball and into the Pie)

Having watched the replay:

  • under-rated by me to date in this thread: Bella, Amber (even though I called it her best game), Barba, Ryan (and you KNOW I enjoy her utter enthusiasm for the game), Ugle, Prpic, Chaston, Dicker.
  • over-rated by me to date in this thread: our goal-kicking conversion rate. Geez.
  • I can see why Ashley-Cooper wasn’t personally too satisfied with her return game, but you’d expect her one-on-one win percent is going to go up quickly. In the last five minutes there are good examples of her getting the ball out of contests to our advantage.
  • Like most teams, the season will change drastically when the AFLW girls depart. That’s key mids (Barba, Radford, Doonan) and talls (Wales, Clarke, Molan) out. The season’s results, across many/most teams, have been wacky enough already without trying to work out what happens after that.

Non-AFLW-listed players yet to play this year:

  • two rucks: Morrow and Ure
  • one almost-ruck: G.L.O.R.I.A.
  • two smaller utilities: (Lily) Bateman and Grech (played in the practice matches)
  • medium mid: Orritt
  • small: Meyers

Oh yeah, and NatMac!

The point being we probably don’t have the immediate answers to those AFLW players going out. We had lots of rucking queries with Nalder leaving, but 2.5 extra rucks suddenly seems like an unnecessary luxury (and that’s after Borg left): so far I’m not convinced Ryan or Russell can transfer to being a full-time key forward.

I can see Gloria Elarmaly as CHF and second ruck. But I can’t see any info on whether she is playing (for Wallan?); all I can see is they won 57-0 last week.

EDIT: found it, Division 3 and she isn’t on their list anyway.

Watched the replay , my god it was a messy game. The kicking to position was bad. They will need to improve 50% to play finals this year.

I also found the VFLW release list from last week, and she was released to there. So I dunno.

First Last Team
Olivia Manfre Keilor
Leah Spargo Keilor
Eleanor Cornish Keilor
Lily Bateman Maribrynong Park
Scarlett Orritt Moonee Valley
Caitlin Grech Strathmore
Gloria Elarmaly Wallan Magpies
Jayda Richardson Yarra Valley Cobras

The good news is FCFC are flaky as; Pies are weak; and Norf is awful (seriously, perhaps better only than Darebin).

And that’s teams in the top six…

I wouldn’t underestimate the affect of not having Clifford playing these last four weeks. We rested her for one week last year, and fell apart.

(Luckily, we were playing Footscray so it didn’t matter, and sheer quantity of attacks overwhelmed our lack of quality.)

Here’s this week’s releases.

First Name Surname Club League
Caitlin Sargent Hillside EDFL (Premier)
Eleanor Cornish Keilor EDFL (Premier)
Olivia Manfre Keilor EDFL (Premier)
Leah Spargo Keilor EDFL (Premier)
Anabel Strahan Keilor EDFL (Premier)
Lily Bateman Maribrynong Park EDFL (Premier)
Scarlett Orritt Moonee Valley EDFL (Premier)
Caitlin Grech Strathmore EDFL (Premier)
Madison Gray Shepparton United NCWL Seniors
Gloria Elarmaly Wallan Magpies NFNL Div 3
Maddy Pearson St Bedes Mentone Tigers VAFA Premier B
Jayda Richardson Yarra Valley Cobras VAFA Premier B

Note that a release does not mean they actually played – e.g. there was no Keilor game this weekend.

I went looking for the opposition’s review, but it turns out Collingwood last posted a VFLW article on 3rd March.

That’s embarrassment.

Why the hell does Elarmaly only play in a Division 3 competition?

She hasn’t played in the first two rounds, and that league appears to have a four round season. So hopefully she does other stuff!

Skills-wise, she is waaaaaay better than Div 3.

Well, they agreed on 1 of the 9 players?

Hmmm.

Collingwood 2.3 (15) def by Essendon 4.7 (31)
8 Eleri Morris (COL) = 4+4
5 Amelia Radford (ESS) = 5
5 Stephanie Wales (ESS) = 5
3 Jess Bates (COL) = 3
3 Amber Clarke (ESS) = 3
2 Georgia Clarke (ESS) = 2
2 Sophie Molan (ESS) = 2
1 Elizabeth Jackson (COL) = 1
1 Megan Ryan (ESS) = 1

LEADERBOARD

42 Jess Bates (COL)
34 Tahlia Meier (WB)
33 Maddie Di Cosmo (CAR)
21 Tessa Boyd (SS)
20 Charlotte Simpson (GC)
18 Jordan Mifsud (BHH)
17 Kaitlyn O’Keefe (PM)
16 Winnie Laing (SS)
15 Marianna Anthony (NM – now CAR)

The Good: they didn’t call her Klarke.

The Bad: they still didn’t get it right… though at least this spelling is plausible, and not uncommon.

The Ugly: ummm, Sophie Molan exists?

Amelia Radford

32 disposals, six tackles, five clearances, 11 inside 50s

Amelia had a sensational game, playing on one of the best in (Jess) Bates. She had a game high handball receives which meant she was as strong on the outside as she was on the inside. Radford was probably pick of the crop from the game, she was efficient and also nullified her opponent.

Alana Barba

22 disposals, 12 tackles, two clearances

Alana continued her great form, including a season high 12 tackles for her. Her tackling proves to be a strong and consistent part of her game week to week.

Stephanie Wales

19 hitouts, 15 disposals, five marks

‘Killer’ was outstanding in her first game for the seasons. Her positioning around the ground and in the contest was very good. She played a little bit up forward to showcase her aerial capacity – she keeps adding to her great form in the AFLW.

Georgia Clark

20 disposals, five marks, four inside 50s

It was Georgia’s first game in the Sash, she was great collect the 20 touches playing off half back and half forward. The most impressive thing about her game was her flexibility and welcomeness to work at both ends of the ground.”

Jo Doonan

19 disposals, three tackles, three marks

Jo played a bit of a different role this week and continued to impress, she worked well in both offence and defence.

Amber Clarke

18 disposals, 14 kicks, two tackles

Amber continued to utilise her speed on the game, allowing her to get space. She played inside and half forward. She has put together three to four games allowing her to grow in confidence and belonging. She has been also getting more involved in the contested game.
